Becoming an Effective Career Coach --> Career Coaching Fundamentals

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

I’ve found that modeling myself as an effective listener and compassionate advisor has made a real difference in how my students respond to me. Many of them are more receptive when they feel truly heard and understood, so I focus on building that trust through empathy and active listening. I’ve also learned that no single coaching style fits every student. Each one has their own personality, background, and pace, so I try to adapt my approach to meet their individual needs. Whether it’s offering encouragement, helping them set goals, or simply giving them space to express frustration, being flexible and supportive helps create stronger, more productive relationships.

I feel my coaching style is a cross between managing and coaching. Relationship building should really be under managing & coaching because without the relationship, there is no real engagement from the student. Listening is key, but I also think it's necessary to sometimes read between the lines of what the student is saying. Often times, they don't know how to either explain what they want or need or know how to effectively express themselves, especially when they are frustrated or upset about not getting 'the job' they want or responding to other things going on.

Overall a career coach must build genuine relationships and have an understanding of their students needs, interests, values and assets in order to best assist when it comes to their students career- decision making

Be sincere and attentive when a student is talking about his frustrations, dreams, goals and strategies to achieve his success.

Being a nurse educator involves being a career coach to nursing students, as well.

The ability of the students can be impacted by two types of variables to make informed choices.

En líneas generales, he aprendido lo relativo a los fundamentos del coaching, alguas características del proceso, el modelo y principio planteado en el marco de los autores que lo sustentan.

By mastering career coaching fundamentals, such as active listening, goal-setting, and empathy, coaches can empower individuals to make informed decisions, navigate challenges, and reach their professional aspirations with confidence.

Overall, genuine connection with the student is going to help them most.  Put your own biases aside and don't be judgmental.

Really enjoyed the link to allow for the student explore interest and where they can go with those intersest careerwise

I've learned that there are 2 styles of advisor approach to student. I would like to use and concentrate on coaching style instead of managing.  Building trust with student/graduate is very important key in building success for student and advisor

I learned the importance of letting the students guide the conversation and set goals themselves' rather than me choosing for them.

It's important to have an open mind and a willingness to share my own experiences to be relatable to the student in order to knock down any guard they may have up.  Having empathy without judgement allows us to have open and honest discussions which leads to greater success.

Whether career coaching or advising on classes, looking at the entire student is important. Their past, present, and future experiences impact their perception, as ours do, and form biases and misunderstandings.

It is important to get to know your students and build a relationship with them. By learning about your student and the things that affect their decision making will help you be more successful in helping the student.

Allowing the student to take the lead and guide them though setting goals is a effective Coaching style.

In this Training module I understood our purpose is less about managing our students and more about supporting them as they make their own decisions. Using tools and skills like asking open ended questions and getting to know their interests builds rapport and creates room to build a strong relationship between you and the student.

You must be genuine in your attempts to help others.

The difference between the advisor and the coach. Will be use to empower the student to meet goals.
