Media Hosting and Sharing Policies

What should students understand after reading the media hosting and sharing policies?

Students should understand that policies will be strictly enforced and any deviation from the polcy may come with consequences. Tone is also very important as well and students also understand that they are in a learning enviroment.

Rules and regulations are in place for the safety of all. Every action has a concequence even on line where people feel annonomous.

Tonya,
True, you have to have boundaries or criteria for this type of assignment.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

Students should be aware of acceptable netiquette practices, the directions/instructions to use the information on the media site, and finally how they will be accessed.

Doni,

You make a great point. Also you and your students have to abide by the rules. Rules mean nothing if you don't enforce them. That can be the biggest problem.

Miriam,

Great point. They also need to know who can "see" the information and what are the implications of people looking at their work.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

They should be aware policies and procedures set in place. Communication is also important...they must THINK prior to responding because they don't want to be judge based on what they post.

Guerda,

You are right. It isn't always just about them! Communication is the key.

Tonya

So very true 'tone' is really important online where non-verbal clues are absent - seems like many internal groups/teams disputes result from a team member sending a communication to fellow team member that causes offense and often it is because of the 'tone' of that communication.

Cheers, Dennis

Dennis,
You are fight. We have said "watch your tone" in the f2f environment it is even more important in the online environment. The saying "sticks and stones. . . " is not right!

After reading the media hosting and sharing policies, students should understand the purpose of the media host, rules and regulation for using server, copyright laws, and the hosts rights to media posted.

Belinda,

Do you think today's student also needs to learn what is appropriate in their opinion? You don't always say what you think?

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

After reading the media hosting and sharing policies the students should understand why these policies are in place, to protect both the institution and the students and support positive outcomes. Students should be able to identify both the positive behaviors expected of them and the negative actions and consequences that would result when the policies are not followed.

Gloria,

You make such an important point! Students do need to know why the policies and what it means for them in learning and professionally.

Dr. Kelly Wilkinson

The policies, foremost, should be written in a way that makes it easy to understand and user friendly for the student. This will assist them in understanding how to respect others responses/views; what to expect; the appropriate ways to compose yourself in the assignments; and lastly, the ramifications of inappropriate use.

Miriam,

I have to say that I agree with your excellent points. In the ever-expanding universe of the online forums, netiquette is key in building and maintaining both an online identity, and maintaining it. It is essential that students know the rules of the "game" going in.

Students need to make sure that they are adhering to the policy of the particular Web site. They must be mindful of the rules and take special care to follow them.

Hello,

The students should understand the requirements, "netiquette" and parameters of the media hosting and sharing policies. For example, I would instruct the students that posts should be 140 characters in length and be relevant to the course content and weekly objective.

- Doc Wibbeke

student should understand the copy right laws of texts, videos and pictures. Many of images and videos on the internet are copyrighted. Students should also not post personal information that may harm the users. And lastly, post must not be slander, explicit, derogatory, or offensive.
