What have I learned about Verbal/Written Communication

Communication is key in al facets of life.  Whether it is Verbal or Written it needs to be clear and concise.  There are advantages to both.  With Verbal communication, you get that instant feedback and can move forward more quickly.  Written communication can be used when clarification is necessary,  you can revise and make sure that the content is clear.  In the classroom communication needs to be worked on on a daily basis.  The better our students get at communication, the more effective they will be.

Why Industry Knowledge Matters in Academic Settings?

To me, bridging the gap between industry and academia is essential because it plays a vital role in preparing future-ready professionals. A career-oriented education system benefits both sides: industries require job-ready talent, while educational institutions aim for their graduates to secure employment shortly after earning their degrees. Integrating industry expertise into the classroom not only enriches the learning experience but also aligns academic outcomes with real-world expectations. In that sense, teaching informed by industry practices can be considered one of the most effective approaches to education.

Trusted Adults

How can educators help students recognize and identify trusted adults in their school community?

Vicarious Trauma

Vicarious trauma is interesting to me.  I have never thought about the fact that those who work closely with people who are going through trauma and dealing with trauma can actually be experiencing trauma themselves.

Child vs. Adult

Some of the students that I work with in high school are over 18. They haven't graduated yet, but they are considered adults.  Are teachers still required to reposrt situations of students that are in unhealthy situations if they are already 18 years of age?

WHAT HAVE I LEARNED

Reflecting on my learning in verbal and written communication, here’s what I’ve gained and how I plan to bring it into my classroom:

Clarity and Precision: I’ve learned the importance of being clear and precise in both my spoken and written communication. In my classroom, I intend to apply this by using straightforward language in my instructions, feedback, and presentations. I’ll make sure that my expectations and guidelines are communicated in a way that leaves little room for ambiguity, helping students understand exactly what’s required of them.
Active Listening: I’ve realized that effective communication involves truly listening to others. In my teaching, I’ll make it a priority to listen carefully to my students’ questions, concerns, and feedback. By actively engaging with their responses and addressing their individual needs, I can foster a supportive environment that values their input.
Professional Tone: I’ve learned the importance of maintaining a professional tone, especially in written communication, where tone can easily be misinterpreted. I plan to model this for my students by crafting emails, feedback, and announcements that are articulate, respectful, and firm when needed. This will help them understand the impact of tone and how professionalism can enhance clarity and mutual respect.
Adaptability: I’ve found that adjusting my communication style to suit different audiences is crucial. In the classroom, I’ll apply this by varying my communication approach based on the needs of my students. For example, with more complex concepts, I’ll use simpler language or analogies, while with advanced students, I might dive into more technical terminology. This adaptability will help make my lessons accessible to everyone.
Feedback and Encouragement: I’ve learned that constructive feedback should be balanced with encouragement. In my classroom, I intend to provide feedback that highlights both strengths and areas for improvement. By combining constructive criticism with positive reinforcement, I’ll support my students’ growth while building their confidence.

Teamwork: identifying, collaborating, assessing

Building teams is essential for humans. Unifying the talents of multiple people into a collective entity can identify issues, collaborate on solutions, and assess how effective the team managed to solve problems.
