We are a small non-profit organization who has added a for-profit school as a means of generating income to keep us afloat. Although we are an educational center already as a non-profit, the for-profit side of education seems rife with pitfalls as it concerns trending careers, etc. We emphasize STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and this industry these days changes every 6 months. I foresee us needing to have more technical people added to our staff so that we can keep abreast of what the newest needs in the workplace are and plan our curriculum accordingly.

For a small institution, I am seeing that our Admissions Representative(s) must also handle Financial Aid, as we have not hired Financial Aid Personnel thus far.. Surely it cannot be a requirement that a Financial Aid 'Department' or 'Officer' be in place for an Institution of our size..

I am amazed at the number of prospects calls we receive after being told by other schools that their criminal background will not affect them. Or after these poor students pay out nearly $20K to attend a class they will not be able to obtain gainful employment in that industry. Needing to pass a level 2 bsckground check is vital in certain industries. Always best to be upfront and honest. My goal, as well as the schools,is for the students to succeed.

why is it that some institutions accept credits transfer from certain institutions but do not accept from some other institutions?

Some institutions don't recognize their alumni after graduation. is that normal?

What are the ongoing training options that your institute offers and through what medium are they available i.e. online courses, literature, meetings, conferences?

It is good to have a file system that is easy to manage. It is good to backup up electronic files and make duplicate copies of paper documents.

What programs, facilities, or extras does your school offer? For example tutoring, online libraries and career services.

It is important to understand you institutions do's and don't of the admissions process. Their are certain things that you must disclose and certain thing that you cannot say. Are you aware of the compliance requirments for your institutions admissions process?

Have you taken the opportunity to learn and review the various marketing strategies of your institution?

Are you allowed to share information with students concerning job opening information that you have that may not be listed or available at the Career Placement Department? Would this be in compliance with Fair Consumer Practices?

I know it is very important to keep a physical student file for each student but is there any software that anyone can recommend for keeping the student's information easily accessible by many employees without having to fight over the student file? My school is fairly new so we have not yet purchased any software and wanted to know which could be good for a small school starting out that is not extremely pricey?

In our institution we refer to the application process as not just the legal act of entering into a contract with the school. This action includes the fulfillment of other required legal documents such as Proof of High School, personal ID or drivers license and the payment of the registration/application fee. At this time other forms are filled that protect both the student and the institution as well.
