Lists

I believe students can learn minimizing stress by using proactive planning and lists for each day.

Stress Management

Our industry (culinary / hospitality) has a very serious issue with substance abuse as a stress management outlet. Best that we talk about that with the students so that they don't get trapped with unhealthy behaviors.

online test taking

We use online testing to allow students to manage their own time better, as well as opening up class time.

Front End Loading?

I emphasis with my students to plan their productions schedules around a "front end loaded" perspective. To be better able to incorporate more dynamic (flexible) time management should things change "on the fly"

Class Management

How can you manage adult learners who didn't do well while they were in school before college...I have adult learners who still can't read

Choose your battles

Just today a student of mine was discussing stress management in a live chat. He said you have to "archive" how you successfully deal with stress so that you can bring out the technique again later. I loved that! For me, choosing what to confront and what to avoid is a big deal. I have effectively decided to "choose my battles" when it comes to work, teaching, parenting, life, etc. There really are things that are out of my control (environmental stressors). I can work mostly on personal frustration and do my best not to be my "worst enemy".

Work-family-life Balance

The "juggling act" that I am used to can be a stressor. I react well to the curve balls that come with being a mother to three small children pretty well. It can get tricky when something else goes wrong, such as computer trouble, car/traffic issues, illnesses, etc. It is these unplanned events that can potentially throw me for a loop. I generally have a resilient attitude and figure "it will all work out" most of the time. A sentiment that was handed down by my father.

New Course Prep

I am teaching a new course this semester and do not have very much experience in this topic. As a result, I needed to read and understand the content so as to be ahead of the students and become an expert. How has anyone adjusted to the same opportunity?

Time

I am usually good with time having taken the Steven Covey management training class through the department of defense it has helped me to get on the right track

What is stressing me out

My students that I have had for the last two years they have started not coming to class and cheating on test and now it is effecting the four good students that show up on time hand in all their work any suggestions

Essays

I never had essay exams because I thought it was a fear for my students but after I tried it once some of them liked the idea and did really good and were creative but the others used it as tool not to study even though I had did review they still didn't pass. I switched up on them and did a mixture of things on my test which makes them think a little more after trial and error I now do fill in the blank define true and false

Stress

Why is it that when students come to class and they don't want to be there they disrupt the whole class with their attitudes and then the other students get stressed out what can be done

Yoga a Solution for Stress

I happen to be fortunate to have my other job being a Yoga Studio. As a long time practioner of all that yoga is, I have a built in method for handling the stress that comes with have two jobs and a life. It is my job to relieve the stress of others and provide tools to deal with life challenges. So, this topic is near and dear to me, but also distant and mostly under control.

Forming teams with students from different culture:

In a cultural diverse community, it is not uncommon to have students from several cultural background, country of origin speaking different languages taking the same class. One of the big challenge is to get to participate in team work in which they have to present their research. What are some methods of motivating students from diverse culture to boldly step forward and present their research?

Stress!!!

I never really thought about the noise level at work as a stressor, but now that I think about it, it makes sense. I love my coffee, but I've cut back drinking it past about 4:00pm so it doesn't interfere with my sleep. Sleep is the closest thing I get to a vacation! As a former CPR instructor, I laughed at the part about the dummies being a distraction--they do look goofy. Usually when I try to meditate, I just end up falling asleep. I'm getting better at taking 10 deep breaths when I start to feel overloaded. Try it, it helps!

Taking care of my kids.

One big source of stress is making sure I'm there for my kids. I helped my son rebuild his condo after the flood in Boulder and I have a 22-year-old daughter who is a cancer survivor so, of course, her health is always on my mind. Nobody likes to commute and I've even toyed with the idea of taking the bus so I can sit back and read to and from work. I try to take a long walk three times a week as I've found it helpful with relieving stress and stiff muscles.

Timesavers!

I'm always trying to improve my grading time so the "50%" idea is truly helpful. While I like multiple choice and T/F quizzes, I rely on essays to judge my student's grasp of the subject we're studying. I never liked them in college, but now I understand why they made us do them! Mobile devices are cropping up in every facet of life; does anyone have a good "one-stop shop" to get up to speed with these gadgets?

Dental office time vs. classroom time

This course has been helpful to me because as a practicing hygienist, my time was largely controlled by the office scheduler. There were times during the day which I used for ongoing tasks, i.e. stocking my supplies and data entry. As an instructor, I'm in control of my schedule and must streamline my activities to use my time to its best. Does anyone have any "tricks of the trade" to share with me?

Dealing with Travel Time Stress

What is the best way to manage time when dealing with a long commute?

silent students

I think that establishing a connection with silent students helps them to open up and start networking. Teachers must find out where that connection may exists and pursue it until connected.
