Sharing is Essential to Life

To me, sharing is a key service that I offer my students. I heard a statistic once that 90% of people today have NO ONE with whom they can share their feelings, thoughts, and the like in a way that is open, honest, and nonjudgmental. We live in a society that is the most connected through social networking, with literally millions of people with whom we can reach out and talk, even if we want to do so anonymously. But yet, as connected as we are, we are the most socially detached group in human history. And we wonder why we have an addiction problem in this country? Instructors and supervisors, learn how to be a counselor now. It's essential, particularly in the career college sector where the clientele is more apt to have deferred to alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, food, or whatnot to handle their problems, rather than having someone to share with. And if you are in the 90% of people who have no one with whom to share, that should go right to the top of your priority list. /rab

Battle Rhythm, Management By Objective, and Managing Time

One thing I learned in the military is that of the "battle rhythm" for recurring tasks. If crews laid out what their tasks are along with the recurrences, managers can see the tasks and how they contribute to the overall objectives of the school. Managers can also see if recurring or repeating tasks are conflicting and help crew members interoperate with their peers. Management by Objective also is a great approach as it sets the corporate, department, team lists of what is most important and how that rolls up into the bigger picture. If crew members can see how their contributions add up, morale improves and can also help with maintaining the battle rhythm. Time management isn't just a personal skill, it's a management objective. I've come to understand that managing a crew means looking at each of them, and then looking at them together as a whole to see the 10,000 foot view. We all have the same amount of time and it's up to us to decide what to do with it. /rab

stressors

i really have learned about stressors, their cause and how to define them and categorize them. by listing them and putting a r or e next to them, for me.. it gives my stress less power and lets me focus on what needs to be done, whether i can REDUCE them or ELIMINATE them? and if i cant do either, what are some coping mechanisms that i can use thruout the day, really really good information!!!!!!

taking control of your time

this was so good to learn about and to understand! often times we think our time belongs to others and we give so much of ourselves, but we control our time. and we need to develop positive ways to deal with this, from organizing our time in the classroom and with modern technology, for example the computer. defining space and organizing files, learning about procrastinating and immediacy, that really helped me. i will try to put those concepts into my life each day

sharing as a healthy coping mechanism

i was very impressed to learn that SHARING, was a very important coping mechanism! just talking to someone, having them share in your struggles thruout the day, your accomplisments. i guess knowing that someone cares what you have to say, and if your filled with emotions like anger, you can definitely release them! i know that i will be sharing.... more often!

15 mins a day to relieve stress..

its quite crazy to me, to think that all it takes is 15 mins of a healthy coping mechanism a day to reduce stress.. i would have thot it was soo much more. whether its breathing, stretching, some physical activity. EVEN SHARING! just to call someone and vent.. sooo simple but really so effective.

STRESS!!

I NEVER REALLY KNEW HOW MUCH STRESS REALLY AFFECTED THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT... i have learned so much from this module. its amazing we dont have more heart attacks , deaths because of everyone juggling their personal relationships and professional relatiionships. its interesting to note that over half of the workdays in the united states are missed because of stress,i know one good thing that will definitely help me in the future is making a stess list. identifying some issues will help me to prioritize and deal with them effectively.

defining your space...

this has been so enlighteneing!!!!!! i never knew how much defining your space could make a difference. keeping it clean, organized, and knowing where everything is to access it at a moments notice. its really hard to share your space with a person and respect the boundaries.. it requires alot of teamwork and understanding each other... even making sure my files on my computer are cleaned up and organized and be accesed right away.....

checking your mail

i found this very interesting, how many of us constantly check our mail our phones, text messages, because we think we are being more efficient with our time and attending to situations right away? its interesting to note, it might be the exact opposite... we spend so much time doing this we fail to see the big picture... it really in essence is slowing us down and taking away from other important tasks...iam glad i have learned this , now.. to put it into practice.

overcoming obstacles

this has been a new way of understanding what the obstacles are and overcoming them, sometimes we arent aware of our obstacles, but once we can identify them we can come up with a plan of attack to overcome them. my issue is the issue of immediacy, this information you have presented will definitely help me to recognize this and address it.

How do you know just how stressed you really are?

While working in a so-called "high stress" occupation, where being under stress is a daily routine, for myself I lose track of the "stressmeter", and do not realize that there is a lot of stress present. We can become so enveloped in what we're doing that we do not realize the actual amount of stress, which could indeed be at an unhealthy level. Are ther any tools that could be used to allow such a person to gauge how any unnoticed stress may actually be having a detrimental effect on them?

Creative Cheating

I require my students to type out their homework. Sometimes I get the exact homework with minor alterations like a font change or even numbered slightly different. The funny thing is that they forget to change their grammatical errors and this really give them away. I call this creative cheating and give them half points the 1st time and if it ever happens again, they get a zero. Why do students think they are sneaky?

Common Instructor Mistakes

Instructors often try to humanize themselves with their students to build rapport. This is not always the best idea because you can gain their respect by showing them your expertise.

Managing Student Behavior

To effectively teach our classes we must actively manage our students. We do not need to "rule with an iron fist" but more fair as to encourage students rather than alienate them.

Dealing With Challenging Students

When dealing with challeging students we must remember that at some point in time, we were all students. Showing compassion and understanding will prove more equitable to our students rather than negatively reinforcing their actions.

Setting the stage for success

As instructors, for our students to succeed we must be diverse in planning because different students learn in different ways. The goal is to be able to educate in a broad spectrum.

stressed out

hear is a classic example i took over an class from a instructor that quit I was using his clip board and mail box till the class was over to make sure I got all the mail for that class and there was paper work on the clip board old roll sheet ect I come in today and the clip board is gone and the mail box cleaned out NO one knows anything aboutit

Students who always look for something wrong

Seriously, another instructor has students who always do this. Causes immense problems every semester. How would you handle this situation? Of course, the administration is always brought in but they still continue.

How has it been working for you?

I often have students whose lives are a train wreck. When they bring their excuses, their complaints, their 'better way of doing it', I ask them, "How has your attitude been working for you so far? Are you happy? Do you have goals? Are you reaching them?" Some students have responded in a positive way once they have had a chance to step out of their lives for a moment to look into their lives. The Center Stage Student

How do you curb a Center Stage Student's behavior when they only want to be center stage when they are cracking a joke? When the jokes are over they become very introverted and won't participate in discussions.
