The Motivating Instructor

Motivation is a vital factor in the educators's management of learning and behaviour in the classroom. The motivating role of educators incorporates efforts to generate conditions in the classroom setting that will invigorate, direct, and sustain students' performance. This promotes morale, enthusiasm and positive attitudes towards learning.

Building Rapport with Students

Rapport seems to facilitate both student motivation for learning and their enjoyment of the course, and enhances student receptivity to what is being taught. To create effective rapport with our students educators should learn to call your students by name, learn students interest, hobbies, personal and professional goal and use personal relevant examples in classroom setting.

Setting the stage for learning

To set the stage for learning clear structure gives students a framework understanding what they are expected to learn. Effective educators introduce the topic and outline the lesson's direction. Instruction should begin by connecting prior learning to current objectives.

Educating Culturally diverse students

Educators that embrace culturally diverse students acknowledge both individual and cultural differences and identify these differences in a positive manner. Thus, create a basis for the development of effective communication and instructional strategies.

Intrinsic Motivation

What do you feel the best way you can bring out someones intrinsic motivation?

student body language

as instructors we need to be aware of student body language and how to find students that are not "getting the material" and maybe lost.

Motivation

Always tell the good students how well they are doing and tell the ones struggling how well they can in act do.

Motivating Adult Learners

Adult learners can be motivated when their instructor shares not only knowledge, but life experience about their field. By doing this, students can more concretely see themselves doing the job and it becomes more "real".

Student Motivation

It is beneficial to show students how much they are learning in their chosen field by conversing with them about the subject matter in informal settings throughot the course. This positive feedback can reenergize their experience.

Intrinsic Extrinsic

It is easy see the connection between the two styles by initially getting students involved with rewards certificates and praise until they reach that point where the students actually turn the corner and become Extrinsic learners and start to enjoy the lessons and activities without the need for 'prizes' this section was well laid out and easy to follow

Student Embassadors

We have implemented student embassedors who are the best students with good grades, excellent attendance, and we allow them to come and help peer to peer with tutoring that is guided and student functions to give them something to strive for.

Disrespect

How do you advise disrespectful students?

Respect

I have been seeing more disrespect to the older students. The younger students tend to feel entitled to an A where as the older students believe they have to work hard to achieve. I have trouble communicating on this topic at times since I am from the old school way of things.....does anyone have this same problem? If so, how do you bridge the gap?

Making a Difference

It is important to let adult learners know that the education they are getting will be instrumental in bettering their life prospects and that they will make a difference.

Adult Learners

It is important to take into consideration the fact that adult learners have many more responsabilities than a typical younger counterpart.

enhancing security during instruction

Practicing enhancing security during instruction works well with my students the first day of class.Students have the full understanding of what to expect in class.

A non-threatening Environment

I think creating a non-threatening environment is VERY important for students. They really have the opportunity to blossom when they feel they will not be made to feel foolish or silly in front of others, when they feel what they have to say is valued, and when they realize we are all in this together.

Extrinsic Motivation

As and instructor i pratice extrinsic motivation skills, and i get great response from my students.

motivation

This was a good course. I feel good that I am already doing 90% of what was suggested here. However, the way our portal is set up, it's difficult to drop grades, as the Assignment List doesn't allow to let some drops grades and others keep their scores...once the assignment is set up, that grade goes in and registers a zero if you were to 'drop the grade.' Basically, you'd have to drop the entire assignment, which could hurt some who actually did well on that assessment.

Security

I enjoyed and agree with enhancing security. I believe that by starting your class ensuring these techniques will provide clear direction for the entire term
