helping senior students retain information

I have a few senior citizens in my class, and I have noticed they are having special trouble remembering the material. Any suggestions for helping them retain information without seeming like I am being disrespectful to them/

students not getting along with eachother

I am curious as to what other instructors have done when faced with chaos and fighting among their students? These are adult college students who are not getting along and causing trouble with each other.

Student Retention.

Student Retention is very important for the student and instructor. It's important for the student because they will be able to obtain the information needed to develop the skills that are required to progress in their program. It is very important for the instructor because it allows them to receive the necessary feedback to ensure they are creating a fun and useful learning environment. Overall, Student Retention is very important for the school as well.

Understanding..

It is very important to understand the students in the classroom. This will allow instructors to adjust their teaching style while ensuring students fully understand the class concept. In addition, identify the way their students learn. This will allow the instructor to address any concerns that students may have about the course.

Instructor motivation

What are some ways the instructor can get motivated?

Refocus

How do you refocus a problem when a student is extremely affevted by a problem not directly involved with the material

Teaching Style.

Teaching style is very important in controlling the environment in the classroom. This can be difficult if the classroom is in a computer lab. Due to social media, students may update their status or comment on a friend picture. It's important to show that the information is not only important, but useful. When students understand the material and can relate to it, they find it useful. This is when they give 100% in the classroom.

Learning can be cool.

I believe the more technology that is used in the classroom, shows student how they can successful find information. A lot of students see the internet as a way to stay updated but not a useful tool to search interesting practices and tools to help understand a topic. Facebook and Twitter is used by many students to update each other. However, showing them how these social media sites can help with assignments and fully understand the background is shocking to most.

Staying Focused on the goal

Students must see the value of setting goals with their education. Also have a good reason to want to participate in class

student comes first

As instructor i agreed to the institution policy, but its not correct all the time some time that's affect instructor performance.

STUDENT RETENTION

How can we deal with too many absemces

finding value in auto education

finding value can be simplified in the auto field. most students have worked or seen a issue with a auto at one point in time. by presenting some issues that can be resolved using processes being covered in the lesson it makes them eager to lear

new students

its was challenging at first to direct ambitions in the right direction of all students. giving them a understanding on how they will learn things that may not be as intriguing but at the same time make doing other things that are more interesting fun and easy

multiple instuctors

our school has just started splitting classes in half to save on pay to instructors, instead of one instructor teaching two 5 1/2 hr classes and one teaching one 5 1/2 night class they are splitting the afternoon class and having one instructor do the first half and the other instructor doing the second half, I know the students do not like this but just wanted a few more opinions on how others feel on it.

Instilling Soft Skills

Hello all, I work at a college like many of you, with a diverse student body and what sometimes seems like an insurmountable divide between our new students and employable ones. I would like to share something the faculty has instituted that has really helped us guide our students in the area of soft skills: Most all of us include 'participation' in our grading; activity in groups, question asking, and general subject engagement. My school has formalized participation to consist of 5 or so soft skills. The only way for the students to earn these points is if they demonstrate Professionalism, Management, Initiative, etc. If a student shows exemplary work in one of these areas, they are nominated for an award. The awards are presented to them infront of their peers. These acknowledgement has been a huge motivator for other students to develop their soft skills as well. Students who consistently show model professional behavior also recieve special acknowledgement at their graduation. It's been an amazing turn around here.

extrinsic and Intrinsic

I appreciate all types of learners and feel that as an instructor it is our responsibility to ensure that the student is learning according to their style. I find it challenging and fun to figure which of the students learn from which style.

Challenging backgrounds

The vast majority of students that I teach come from impoverished areas and thus are disadvantaged monetarily, educationally, but socially as well. To be blunt about it the social skills of their home environment are often the exact opposite of what brings success in an academic or professional setting. I try to aid in their transition by attempting to model professional behaviors. I have also found success with adult learners when they have opportunities to demonstrate previous work knowledge and relate that to topics I am teaching in class.

Student Retention // Gray Area

Sometime student retention is a difficult decision between keeping a student that barely passes or having the student withdraw and retake the course to insure they have learned all the objectives of the course. Any insight on how to make the right decision?

Clarity in teaching

Whoever wrote the quiz questions does not understand the precepts taught in this module. They are vague and not very precise in what they ask for. Many times at least 2 of the answers would work equally well. One problem many teachers have is they forget the fact that they are an expert in their field, and their students are only learning it. What is abundantly clear to the instructor might be vague or muzzy to the students. If very few students in a class fail to grasp a concept it is time for the teacher to take a second look at how they are presenting it.
