Motivating students to want to study and do well

Student Needs

The hardest part to figure out in a 3 week session is a student's needs. Not only do you have to figure out what learning style they have, or what learning or other disabilities they may have, or what past experiance they may have that pertains to the course of study. Now we put in there a student's needs, this can be the pass or failure of this student in the course or possibly their future. If we as teachers can not find out what each and everyone of our students needs are, then we can't do our job to teach the material. Everyone relates to something and we have to find that idea or revalant material to tie our learning objectives to so that the student can relate to our message and grow in our and their course. The courses we teach are as much the students as ours as teachers. Students choose their course of study and want to learn it as well as they can. We as instructors have lived our courses and want to teach it as well as we can. So for this to work we need to know how to tie this to the students needs.

focus on students

Sometimes we find ourselves drifting away from our objectives. Things in are lectures seem to slow down become dull just going through the motions, we even bore ourselves, this is passed onto our students.That when we need to motivate ourselves open up for discussion with student and teacher.

Student motivation

This takes creativity on the insturctor's part but also requires the attention of the student; finding the correct "tools" ensures all students can be motivated

Refocus

Isn't that called a mental health day?? Renergizing what you are teaching sometimes takes a "look back" at what the students did learn thus far. Knowing what you have been effective at gives you a "boost" to the next step

Student Retention

The responsibility of the instructor is to motivate and show respect and care for each student. Find what motivates the student and utilize it.

Understanding Adult Learners

After a brief understanding of where each adult learner's experience, I have found utilizing it to enhance or affirm their motivations for taking the class has made a difference.

Importance of Student Feedback

As someone who has completed pharmacy school, I'm aware of the importance of monitoring patients and modifying their therapy based on objective data (e.g. their blood pressure, heart rate, glucose levels, electrolytes, lipid panels). Based on those values, I can modify their therapy where appropriate (e.g. increase/decrease dose). I could be wrong, but in the teaching profession, I've found that seeking input from students, as valuable as that is, is based more on a subjective viewpoint. Based on this module, I do plan on having them fill out sheets that encourages their feedback. What I want to know is this: because the student may be basing their answer(s) on their subjective perspective, how can we be sure their answer(s) is(are) reliable? I would REALLY appreciate responses; thanks!

I have noticed that if students do not see the instructor excited about the material being presented to them that they will not have a motivation for learning and will quickly become disinterested in the class.

having fun

I am a very fun loving ,sarcastic person so I tend to make a lot of jokes and have fun during class while getting the objective/subject being learned to the students. Students love it!

Students learning characteristics

i tend to use a few different ways to teach topics in the first few days of class and then ask the students as a whole which way helps them learn best.

Knowing most student learning style will enable instructor ability to help a student.

Something New

I have notice that older adult are easier to teach than students 18-2, because non traditional student know what they what at this point. However, the tradtitional students feel that have all the time in the world. Great topic!

student rapport

Developing a good rapport with your student is important for a good student to teacher relationship. This will give those students a great learning environment for a better learning experience.

It is important to create a comfortable environment to help students stay actively involved. They need to feel the instructor wants them to be there.

Understanding a student's needs

With such a diverse range of students in the classroom, sometimes it is difficult to understand an individual student's needs. It does take some time to get to know them and understand what they may need to be successful. But in time, assuming the student is willing to respond, those needs can be addressed on an individual basis.

Student focus

I have found several veterans who have a difficult time focusing. Additional attention if required for them to have a smooth learning enviorment.
