Create a list of the advantages of being an older student

Part of this lesson is about older learners. In fact one of the quiz questions is "One of the common fears about college for adult learners is:" And the answer is: "Feeling at a disadvantage compared to others" I went back to school (Community College and then University) in my mid forties. I did not feel I had a disadvantage. Quite the opposite, I felt my focus, life experience, vocabulary, and lack of distractions were to my benefit. Most of my students are older than the average 28 years for career college students. I hear every day the "I'm too old to learn", "My memory is gone", and "I don't have study skills" stories. How about compiling a list of the advantages of being an older student. Things we can all use to encourage and provide assurance to our older students. I'll start with the ones I mentioned above... The needs of Students

Students have many needs. I work as a people with disabilities program manager and I get students who have special needs in the classroom. These students sometimes have learning disabilities, which require more attention and extra time. We must allow these students to have extra time to complete their assignments. The students with disabilities are able to learn but need additional time to complete their work. I wonder has anyone else has had students with disabilities and how you handled them. AL

Motivation

Motivating a class offers many opprotunities to get the students excited about the learniong process. The ways to motivate a class is endless if you know the learning styles of your students.

Focus

It is important to remain focused with the classroom. There are many ways not to loose that focus but I feel one of the better ways for me is to keep the class funand vavy the routine on a daily basis.

Retention Strategies

It is good to have a solid stradegy in place well before class begins in order to retain the students. Sometimes these need to be adjusted from day to day depending on the students.

Knowing your students

In order to make the students successful in their education it is important to learn the characteristics of each one as an individual. This is important in order to make the required adjustments in presenting the material so they can understand it comfortably.

retention

I find that retention is sometimes frustrating,I make sure when a student is absent that when he or she comes back I ask how he or she is doing.I let them know if they need anything or if I can help with anything let me know because we missed them. This acknoledgement shows the student you care and I really do.I want all my students to show up everyday and I also explain why that is importnat to them as far as there grade but more importantly how it is important in the working world.Scott Cohen

Mixing the old with the new

the art of learning is needed with todays tech. we must teach our younger genaration the art of our skill's for a better tomorrow.

Motivation

I love to bring excitement to the class. I think by being a positive energy I can bring more excitement than standing up front lecturing with a monotone voice. I always try fun new way to be creative and bring the students energy up as well.

Focus

Focusing on the needs of students is important when learning how to involve the class. I have also been a true believer that you should use both lecture and demonstration to help your students understand the topics.

How do you motivate your students?

Retention is something that many colleges struggle with. Finding what excites your students to learn I believe is the key to retention. If students do not find the materials useful they may get bored and leave. If you apply the content to everyday life you will spark interest in the students mind and they will want to come to class. Do you agree?

Retention

As an instructor I feel it is important to learn about the needs of each of the students. As stated in the material we will have different age groups and as instructors need to learn how to satisfy the needs of each student to get them involved. Do you have certain tricks that you use to get the generations involved together?

Motivation

I find it is easier to motivate myself once my students have been motivated.

the classroom...

I have often used the analogy that teaching is like stand up comedy. You had better get your audiences attention very quickly or you will lose them. Also, you better not use the same material too often because then you are predictable.

student characteristics

Many times in dealing with students I have found that with a little detective work before meeting with them, you can discover what the "real" issue or issues are. There is no such thing as asking the wrong question, it actually is asking the question the wrong way.
