Responding to Wrong Answers - Mathematics

As a mathematics instructor, I use questioning often, as a means of assessing student understanding (and my teaching). However, usually their responses are right on point or not. I can struggle with students who are way off track with their responses. I will praise and encourage their attempt, but I can sense a bit of disappointment on their face when I "gently" redirect/rephrase the question. Are there any other math instructors in this class who face a similar challenge?

helping students with dyslexia

Discussing how I can be of assistance is very important; also what has helped the student in the past.

learning groups

The forming of groups is a very good way of getting to know my students.

ELL

The introduction of new vocabulary to students , and making sure that the words are understood is very important in my classroom.

106- discovering my own style

I would like to keep a notebook to see what I am attempting in my classroom in order to improve my delivery style.

Types of questioning

There are 3 different types of questioning techniques. They are: Closed, open, and procedural. The closed question draws from your personal memory, open questions require more than simple recall, and procedural questions ask you to follow a certain set of steps. Open questions should be the crust of your questioning, engaging the student and forcing them to participate in the lecture.

Vusual test

I think for art students, test that includes multiple -choices with visual images is more effective.

Student assesment

This model was great help to how to biuld thoughtful and wellwrtten test.

Creating question regarding the new subject

After I took this course, I am getting better to get more questions and answers from my class. I create some questions and post them before lecture. After lecture, I ask class if there is any qyestion and I noticed that my preposted questions gave ideas and encouragement to students to think of their questions regarding the subject.

Student who has both writing and visual learning style

Always provide students who learn best through reaading and looking at pictures, with power point slides with good size of reading matreials.

Know It All Types

Another technique tfor a 'know it all' is to ask them to tell the other students where he/she learned about the topic. It could be a forum, another class, or themselves.

Active learning is great but.....

Testing needs to be rethought too. Students often understand the information, but can't pass tests. This leads to a return to passive learning. Tests do not care if you understand something or have the information memorized. Until testing methods are changed passive learning will be the norm.

learning preferences

I usually incorporate various methods of instruction as I am teaching. On the first day of class I have the students complete a learning style survey. This helps me to modify my teaching methods.

first meeting

I have learned to set the expectations on the first day and to set the bar high. I feel that it is easier to ease up than it is to get them under control later. If the students know what is expected than they will most likely be successful.

differences

I have yet to see any 2 classes be alike. I have learned that I have to modify each learning session according to the type of students that I have. This helps the students to be successful in the classroom. Also Identifying learning styles can help me plan the course.

still learning

Even after teaching for almost 3 years there are new things that I am learning to incorporate in the classroom in order for the students to be successful.

new to teaching

There seem to be so many things to remember as an instructor. The most important thing for myself is to know the students are learning the content and that they can apply what they have learned in their field.

Learning Styles

Students are not always aware of their dominate learning style. Consider conducting a learning style self-assessment of students. Initiate class discussion of learning style differences. For group-work assignments, ensure that each group include a diversity of learning styles so students can help each other learn. This will help students see the class members as a self-help, cohesive learning community. Professor David Demko, PhD Concorde - Jacksonvile, Florida djdemko@concorde.edu

Any suggestons on retaining students?

Lectures

I find it very difficult to grasp and maintain the students attention during lecture. The subject I teach can be a very dry portion of their overall 20 months here at our college. There is very little "hands on" training during this period, therefore we have a fairly low retention rate through this time. But because of the type of training, the students must complete my portion first before they can move on to the "fun" part of learning. Any suggestions on ways to possibly improve this?
