I agree with you, and these are some things that I do. In my classroom, I intentionally build an atmosphere where students feel safe, respected, and motivated to learn. I use several strategies to ensure that every student feels comfortable in a new course and confident in their ability to succeed. 1. Build Relationships Early I make it a priority to learn students’ names quickly and greet them personally to create a sense of belonging. I also share my own background in the electrical trade to build trust and credibility. By showing genuine interest in their goals and experiences, I help students see that I value them as individuals. 2. Establish a Welcoming Environment I strive to maintain a positive classroom tone through encouragement and recognition of small successes. My lab is organized and clearly labeled so students know where materials are and feel comfortable navigating the space. I remind them often that no question is a bad question, especially when learning hands-on skills. 3. Set Clear Expectations At the beginning of the course, I clearly explain classroom and lab rules, grading policies, and safety procedures. Students feel secure when expectations are consistent. I model professional behavior and demonstrate what quality work looks like — from neat wiring to proper tool use. 4. Start with Team-Building Activities I incorporate icebreakers and small group challenges, such as tool identification relays or quick wiring exercises. These activities encourage collaboration and allow students to develop teamwork and leadership skills early in the course. 5. Scaffold Learning I design lessons that progress from simple to complex tasks. Students begin with foundational skills and gradually take on more challenging projects, such as NCCER competencies. I provide clear guidance at first and reduce support as students gain confidence. Progress is celebrated at every stage. 6. Promote a Growth Mindset I emphasize that learning is a process and that persistence matters more than perfection. By sharing success stories of former students who earned certifications or found success in the trade, I help current students believe in their potential. 7. Keep Communication Open I regularly check in with students about how they’re feeling and progressing. Feedback is given privately and respectfully, and I encourage open communication. Students know that I am available for academic support and personal guidance when needed. Would you like me to format this as a professional reflection document (for teacher evaluation or portfolio upload, like a PDF or Word file)?

Thank you Betsi. The follow-through you mentioned is crucial. Even with a detailed syllabus and clear instructions, inconsistent follow-through can leave students uncertain about course expectations and overall dynamics.

Great insight Betsi, I agree with the points you mentioned. Knowing that a student has access to their teacher for any questions or concerns helps out alot.

I totally agree with what Betsi R. stated in her video, and if I were a student, I would definitely feel comfortable in approaching her for support. Based on what she just said, she gives clear, direct instruction and support to the students. Thank you.

Having a syllabus set up for the course so the students know what to expect from Day 1 will make them feel safe.

"A student needs to feel and secure. Understanding the grading criteria. Understanding how to communicate with the instructor." Simple but so true. Thanks Betsi.

Agreed --- communication is key. The icing on the cake is a great set of guidelines and expectations. I always appreciated when an educator stayed true to their word and followed up on any of my outreach. Thank you for sharing!
