Student Retention

I think the whole college should take these courses.  Having a student centered approach is of the upmost importance for success.

Student retention (as far as instructors are concerned) is centered around one question:

Are your students learning the material?

One of the most difficult concepts for an instructor to come to grips with is that WE work for the STUDENTS...essentially, the students have hired us to steward them through this material...if that isn't happening, then you are not effective at what you do. The instructor's job is to figure out how to improve that relationship in any way possible.

It is not the mark of a successful instructor that they are considered "hard" or "demanding" because the majority of their students fail to pass their course...that is actually the sign of a failed educator. The sign of a successful educator is that the majority of their students both COMPREHEND THE MATERIAL & PASS THE COURSE..

I have always held to this standard, but I am surprised by the number of instructors who brag about how many students they have failed....it confounds me on a daily basis.

I welcome all comments!

Thanks!

I Agree

I agree this is much needed information

I am wondering if the student/students are actually setting goals to take the time to study? Is the retention loss only on the school, how much does the responsiblity fall on the student?

I agree instructor should refuse to make the course successfull all students

I Strongly agree. Everyone involve with a student should know and be made aware of the importance of Customer service. Without them we would not have a job. And anyone who is an Educator would no longer have the opportunity to change and improve student lives.

student retention is very important and all school personnel should get involve with the student's life in the campus, either good or bad.

I agree.

Yes, without the students, we will not be here! We are here to support them, create a positive culture for them, and be an example of academic achievement.

I agree.  Attitudes of instructors toweard students directly affect their perception of theselves

I agree.  I think this should be a manditory class for everyone employed at the school.  If was very informative and helpful.

Retention and engagement go hand-in-hand. Retention should be the natural effect when students are engaged with the instructional material and employing their own unique learning styles.

This course helped me to see the importance of retention and the importance of everyone working together to retain students
