I have learned that many things can affect learners. I also learned the different types of learners
Regardless of the environment, students that disrupt learning, procrastinate and are upset can coexist with students who are highly motivated, independent, critical thinkers, and actively involved in the class. It is important for instructors to recognize each student and their habits in order to ensure each student is maximizing their opportunity to learn in the classroom without taking away from others' experiences.
What i learned in this section was that reasons for students to prematurely leave online learning programs or courses is due to the alienation, tech issues, workload, and competing responsibilities. This is something that i have witnessed myself as becoming an instructor, but i hope to do all i can for students, so they may succeed against all that may combat that.
I think it is important to document any interaction I have with a student in regard to policy, grades, and tardiness. This will help keep a paper trail of any disruptions.
I learned that even online class will have the one student who wants to be the center of attention, it can be in a positive or negative way.
I learned many useful techniques for handling disruption on the discussion boards.
This section gives some valuable information on how to address different types of students. It also provided helpful information about strategies to deal with difficult students professionally and fairly. This session informed about reasons why students might drop a course. Personal or family issues, not having enough technical knowledge for online course, and workload.
Communicating via emails and being addressing to students personal problems with privacy.
Keeping student's record is important. Communication is the key to resolve any conflicting issues. We can counsel the patients via email. We have to be careful about the choice of wording. Based on the student's learning style and current situation we may offer tips regarding how to complete the course on time.
Always keep a pulse on your students, during the introductions see whole has children, aging parents, keep lines of communication open. Always refer to IT help desk in every module with phone numbers, email links etc.. Make is harder for the attrition to find excuses/reasons to leave
ensure you are communicating with each student daily. Encourage the students to participate in course discussions
I learned ways to identify particular types of learners and suggestions on how to identify and resolve issues with these types early on.
The technical survey early on is a great idea since this would need to be addressed early on to participate before falling too far behind and possibly exiting the course prematurely.
It is important to keep students engaged, minimizing students attrition, counseling and communicating with them, keeping their records, resolving conflicts and dealing with undesirable behaviors.
Evaluate and deal with competition and behavioral issues.
Online teaching brings all sort of challenges with students. I learned the importance to be prepared and to expect the unusual. Students are human and tend to behave differently. No matter what, there will be those who can never be satisfied.
I like the recommendations on how to deal with the different types of disruptors during online learning. As a brand new instructor, these types of recommendations are extremely helpful to me.
In this module I've learned about adult learner attrition. Keeping course records, communicating with students, counseling students, dealing with undesirable behavior, resolving student conflicts and minimizing student attrition.
The behavior & conflict management modules, coupled with the conversation regarding attrition was beneficial. I'm certainly guilty of discounting things I see in the F2F classroom as being relevant to the online classroom.
Managing e learning environment can be challenging. It's important to identify student leaning behaviors and styles and know how to intervene.
I believe getting to know the students, establishing and implementing their learning skills, would be easier to teach the class as a whole.
We must be prepared and able to manage a lot of situations in classroom: Procastination, conflicts, student behavior, technical issues, lack of participation, etc.
