Differentiated Instruction | Origin: ED201

This is a general discussion forum for the following learning topic:

Students with Disabilities in the Classroom --> Differentiated Instruction

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

Try your hardest to accommodate the student without creating too much awareness to the disability in a classroom setting.

Understanding that any of the accommodations that need to be made for any kind of the disabilities in this lesson should not impact the rest of the class and the class standards should be met.

Never allow someone's "disability" to prevent them from learning. Everyone is capable of learning you just have to put a little more effort into their education.

I have learned about how the instructor should approach the student in the classroom, with an equality of curriculum learning, making no differences in the delivery of instruction but meeting the students' needs as the instructor using various strategies for positivity. There are several things we should do as we are teaching, no financial or administrative burden, no change in the curriculum etc. We should meet universal learning principles by keeping the student in a safe environment and providing equality of learning to every student, Affective as to the why of learning, how of learning and the what of learning.

This idea of accommodating does not mean watering down the material. Rather the idea/concept is to make sure that each student is successful and that might mean a different type of instruction. The UDL standards are used more widely now than before.

The learning and accommodations provided by this module will enrich my practice as I work towards ensuring equality of opportunity.

I learned that providing accommodations for students should not equal lower expectations. The student still needs to engage with the content. Example, if they don't like taking notes, that doesn't mean that they can't. Their 504 may say that have difficulty writing, but that does not mean you should avoid it as an instructor. Typing is an option. Allowing the student longer to take notes is an option, too.

This was great information. Accommodations of instructions should be available for every student whenever they are struggling.

Reasonable accommodations are a must in the classroom. Roosevelt said it best. "We know that equality of individual ability has never existed and never will, but we do insist that equality of opportunity still must be sought"! This is going on my wall.

I have learned that some students will need accomodations, and that the accommodations are presented in a way that the student does not feel different from their peers

This module addressed the role for accommodation.   It also discussed UDL divides learning into three components what/how/why.

this module described multiple methods to determine if an accommodation is reasonable. The module also introduced UDL, universal design for learning, and differentiated instruction where students may be able to demonstrate their knowledge using alternative methods.

I learned about Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to help all students.

I learn there is a right and wrong way to give accommodations to students

Comment on Samanthessa Jacob's post:

This module has delivered some amazing information to utilize in the classroom regarding so many of our students with multiple aspects of disabilities. I believe the most interesting thing I learned is the UDL, which approaches learning to all in a general format to deliver equal learning to all. Therefore, any student if disability or not has the chance to receive what is needed to help achieve their educational goal.

I learned that accommodations should be reasonable and the curriculum should not be watered down. I learned that UDL is divided into 3 parts, the what, the how, the why of learning.

I've learned how to distinguish between an accomodation and a modification

I have learned in this class, that there are way less things which are not reasonable in terms of accommodations than are ! I liked the Roosevelt quote about the  quality of individual ability never existing but that equality of opportunity still must be sought.

Differentiated instruction is an opportunity to meet the student where they are at with their learning to support their successes and achievement.  UDL is a type of differentiated instruction that does not single out students with disabilities, but can actually support all learners in the classroom.
