Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

I learned that meeting your class for the first time is very important. Be early and friendly. Introduce yourself and make sure you start to learn your students' names and that you are pronouncing them right. It is also valuable to encourage your students to get to know each other.

First impressions matter. Greet everyone with a welcome and smile.

Start with an ice breaker

First day of class its good to engage with students. First Impressions are important .

Meeting the class for the first time is all about setting a comfortable tone, being genuine, and showing students they’re in a place where they can learn and be themselves. Being friendly, open, and ready to make that first day feel welcoming instead of intimidating.

You only get one time to make a first impression. On the students first day it is important that the instructor is ready to start before the students arrive for class. One thing an instructor can do is place there name on the board along with the class information so that the student knows where they are at to help with reducing anxiety from their first day of class. Instructors should start on day one trying to learn the names of each of their students.  A great way to do this is by conducting introductions starting with themselves. From there, go over the syllabi with the class so that they know what they will be learning. There are many more things an instructor can do, but these are some that stood out the more for me.

When meeting the class for the first time I think it is important to be prepared arrive early get everything laid out as you have planned.  Engage with students as they arrive for class, make them feel comfortable and ready to learn.  Have your syllabus to hand out to each student, have your class number listed on board along with the instructor's name.  Make sure the students are in the correct class and address any issues the student might have.

On the first day of class, it's important to give information about your background as an educator along with any relevant experience in the field in which you educate about. Additionally, get to know your students' educational achievements and backgrounds and have them get to know one another. This helps the students feel like they belong in the class and sets a comfortable standard of knowing their surroundings to facilitate a space for communication and learning.

Students need to feel comfortable enough to open up about themselves. By the instructor talking about oneself it achieves that purpose

I learned that the first day can set the tone for how the course and first impression golden and learning and remembering students names is paramount

As we have often heard, you only get one chance to make a "first impression" don't waste the opportunity.

We are fortunate that in our program we have a course, DMS 100 - essentials of sonography and ethics, that directly facilitates the beginning of the course.  On day one of the course we go over all of the fundamentals covered in this course.

The first class is extremely significant in setting the stage to provide a safe, respectful and motivating environment. Class preparations, clear expectations, timeliness, learning student names, building relationships as classmates and with the instructor all help to provide a successful learning environment.

i like using icebreakers and setting the room atmosphere light to get rid of the anxieties so students are open to learning new material

The first day of class sets the stage for both student and professor.

I feel inspired to create a first day that builds rapport and trust between students with each other and between students with myself. I want to come across as inclusive, prepared, flexible, and passionate about creating a space to learn. I will aim to do that by sharing appropriate information about myself and my experience in the field, and encourage my students to share their experiences. Assessing body language, facial expressions, and verbal tone will help me guide the engagement and comfort level of the group.

I learned that the first day is about more than introductions. It’s about creating connection, setting clear expectations, and making students feel welcomed and supported

I learned that the first day of class sets the tone for the entire course, and that being prepared, welcoming, and clear about expectations helps students feel comfortable and motivated. I plan to apply this by creating a positive first impression, introducing myself, learning students’ names, using simple icebreakers, and clearly explaining course goals so students feel supported, confident, and ready to engage from day one.

The importance of introducing yourself, outlining expectations and getting to know your students.
