About me
I am currently serving as the program director for the diagnostic medical ultrasound program at ECPI's Emerywood Campus in Richmond, VA.
Activity
We run our program with about 50% lecture and 50% skills lab learning. My college and I have discussed introducing other delivery methods into our program, but we have found that some of the alternative delivery methods are far too time consuming.
We are fortunate that in our program we have a course, DMS 100 - essentials of sonography and ethics, that directly facilitates the beginning of the course. On day one of the course we go over all of the fundamentals covered in this course.
Demonstrating proper planning and preparation for your class is a huge opportunity to model good behavior for your students. I've also found that it helps with establishing boundaries with the class. Professors that appear chaotic in their approach to teaching indirectly encourage their students to take their lessons less seriously.
I feel like I am constantly trying to weight professionalism against authenticity. I understand that the two are not mutually exclusive, but they do occasionally collide. Especially when I think that I should not say what I'm thinking in the moment.
I can appreciate how VR and AR would be beneficial to the ultrasound student, but it will be quite a while before the technology will be sophisticated enough to simulate the ultrafine tactile movements the ultrasound technology student needs to develop.
