This module reinforced how powerful orientation can be in building institutional connections and reducing buyer’s remorse. I learned that orientation is not just about sharing information, but about helping students leave already feeling like they belong. Simple actions such as being greeted by familiar faces, interacting with staff and current students, and learning how to navigate the campus reduce anxiety and build confidence before the first day of class.
I also learned that interactive, student-centered orientation activities are far more effective than passive presentations. When students move through departments, ask questions, and connect with peers, they begin forming relationships that support retention.
I intend to apply this by focusing on early engagement, collaboration across departments, and creating opportunities for students to connect socially and practically. Helping students feel supported, informed, and confident from the start strengthens their commitment and increases the likelihood they will persist.
