Monitoring

Attention = retention
Often time’s students don’t want to reveal personal parts of their lives. How do we give students attention in a way that doesn’t infringe on their personal lives? Please list 3 examples.

John,

1. Engage them in friendly conversation that allows them to share if they want to do so.

2. Ask open-ended questions in class that give them a chance to draw on their personal experiences for examples.

3. Talk in class, or in an advising sesion, about one's own life as well as how the career choice and education impacted it.

John,

I have dealt with students like this. What I have found to work is to just:

1. To share with them areas of my life that may relate to something they may be dealing with in school.

2. Discuss with them how they are feeling about their classes, instructors and what are somethings that are looking forward to when they graduate.

3. Set a day each week that we would just meet to have a snack and just talk about their week.
