I learned about the resources available for assessing the background knowlrdge of diverse students in order to have a better understanding of the techniques and types of lesson objectives I will need to incorporate into my lesson plan. I have a diverse group of students in class and this will help me to better connect to my students' experiences as well as provide them a more personalized, as well as effective, method of instruction in order to increase their knowledge base by linking learning outcomes with their prior knowledge and experiences.
I've learned about the resources available to help assess student knowledge, and integrate their experiences into the curriculum. I have a lot of diverse students and this will help me better engage them through connecting their prior knowledge to real world experiences that my course teaches.
This topic focused on so many things when it comes to engaging a diverse group of students from different parts of the world and, more importantly, equipping them with the necessary skills that will help them to start and run successful businesses or become self-sufficient. It underscored the importance of conducting a pilot study before starting a project or doing one's due diligence before entering any form of enterprise. It reminded me of the importance of culture when deciding to go global.
From this module, I’ve learned the importance of integrating global social justice into CTE to create equitable learning environments. I will apply this by using students' diverse backgrounds to scaffold learning and build global competencies, aligning their experiences with career goals. I’ll also use the Global Social Justice Framework to design inclusive lessons that activate students’ prior knowledge and promote equity.
I have always tried to include diverse learning opportunities in my course but this module made me start thinking about some creative ways to bring those learning experiences to life through practical problems and discussions. Learning more about my students and their backgrounds and being flexible about the assignments that I give each semester will help me build upon what they already know and increase their level of retention and success.
In healthcare, the information can be so foreign to our students, activating the background knowledge can help them bring their own unique perspective to the course. That link can increase their understand and may trigger others to respond with their own perpective.
I enjoyed thinking about how my students' diverse backgrounds could be used in my math courses. I have many students from outside the United States that have experiences in math that are different from students that were raised in the United States, but when we discuss the concepts we realize there are many similarities. It is intriguing to me to think of the students discussing and explaining their previous math experiences and teaching other students about their culture in the process. Helping students make connections between their prior experiences and connecting it in a new way will help them make those connections throughout their education as well as their careers.
Module 3: Engaging Diverse Students
I found this module particularly engaging due to its relevance to common classroom scenarios. I intend to adapt resources such as the Conversation Questions and the Getting to Know Your Students Questionnaire to enhance student participation and facilitate a smoother transition into the class.
I enjoyed the video from Columbia, it was great to have a deeper information about the use of the background of a student in their field of knowledge, also the resources availables make me get into a deeer thought about what has been talking about on the series of videos.
And I think is important to know that a background knowledge that a syudents can bring to the class is something that you can take advantage of it in terms of teaching.
The information, examples and resources in this module is essential in creating a safe learning environment for all students. Empowering student learning is valuable when teachers are able to activate background knowledge and support students in actively reflecting on how "concepts, experience or skills" impacts their everyday life and experience in our diverse culture.
Hoping to help our ESL students be successful in the workforce.
First it is important to use questionnaires and discussion to get to know the backgrounds of your students. This allows the teacher to understand the diversity and multiculturalism of their students. Then probe goals and interests by focused discussion. Allows students to choose projects based on future goals and work in teams to create real world environments. This is the process of connecting background information with current education and then projecting that onto future goals.
Then as the project comes to a conclusion, bring in community members who specialize in those jobs and are from diverse backgrounds. This allows the students to learn real life concepts, work with others to complete projects, and visualize career goals. This also allows faculty to show the global economy and cultural awareness through the diversity of their students' backgrounds.
Knowing my students and their backgrounds is very important, and having a diverse class allows others to see how things are done in their part of the world. The cuisine project offered many helpful tips on how to go about group projects and internationalization of courses
So far, I have understood that engaging with diverse views helps us to meet students where they are, and to build the kind of school/campus community across different spectrums that is essential for a vibrant environment.
To ensure engagement of diverse students in my courses, I will implement various strategies tailored to their needs and backgrounds. This includes incorporating diverse perspectives and examples into the curriculum, fostering a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment, and providing multiple avenues for participation and expression. Additionally, I will utilize a variety of teaching methods such as group discussions, interactive activities, and multimedia resources to accommodate different learning styles and preferences. Regular feedback and communication with students will also be prioritized to address any concerns and ensure that everyone feels valued and supported in their learning journey. By actively engaging diverse students, I aim to create a dynamic and enriching educational experience that promotes mutual respect, understanding, and academic success.
This module offered many suggestions and valuable learning tools for faculty to take to the classroom. Central Piedmont's Culinary Arts program is very diverse. The Nepalese cuisine project gave me further insight on other opportunities to increase globalization beyond employment and cuisine.
I really appreciate all of the resources available here. After just completing a Global Cuisines course - oo late for this training :( - I r could have used t and will be able to incorporate next time, the virtual field trip handout in association with the Study Abroad Assn virtual field trips I had assigned.
I really enjoyed this module and found the Nepalese cuisine project very helpful. I also think knowing and understanding your students is vital creating a positive CTE experience. I found the Columbia University example very informative as well.
I found new insights and ideas in this module and especially thought the Nepalese restaurant project was innovative and impactful.
This module affirmed what I have been attempting to do with my students, yet it provides an organized and scaffolded manner in which to do it.
