You can always learn from other people.
In today's world it is important to be globally fluent - able to understand, communicate with, and work with coworkers from other cultures. Some companies do business worldwide, or an employee may be in a position to manage coworkers from other cultures. Activities to help students increase their global fluency can include having each student talk to the class about their culture and customs, invite older family members to talk to the class about the culture, customs etc, take virtual fieldtrips, and compare and contrast differences between the cultures they have learned about.
Global/Multicultural Fluency is a very important part of workplace culture. As the world has become global, through the Internet/World Wide Web, we have become more sophisticated in reaching others. Now, through means like social media, networking platforms and email, we can reach anyone in the world. And places like America have become more multicultural than ever before. But for other reasons, diversity leads to prosperity. Since we live in a world where people come from various backgrounds and situations, sensitivity to someone's experiences can take a worker, or team leader, or manager, a long way in terms of interpersonal relationships in the workplace, and an organization's morale, productivity and overall well-being.
Understanding and respecting cultural differences helps improve communication, teamwork, and problem solving skills. Being culturally aware also makes employees more adaptable /better prepared to work in diverse global environments. Using common language in the workplace is important for clear communication, safety, and teamwork, also respecting other languages and cultures helps create an inclusive workplace, keeping communication professional, without excluding others.
Global and multicultural fluency is about understanding, respecting, and working effectively with people from different cultures and perspectives. I learned that these skills improve communication, reduce conflict, and prepare students for diverse workplaces. I plan to apply this by encouraging respectful dialogue, exposing students to multiple viewpoints, and designing activities that build cultural awareness, empathy, and adaptability in real-world contexts.
Being able to appreciate and being aware of diversity and cultures is very important as it helps us understand one another and learn for each other.
there is a benefit to understanding different cultures especially in the workplace
Different cultures and backgrounds have to find common goals to promote equity.
This is a tough area to get full buy-in from faculty. Where we get into gray areas is the standards of the practice and the social norms that may not line up with them.
Giving the the students the ability to have these types of conversations to exercise their ability to sharpen their listening skills, empathy, and understanding cultural differences.
I learned that global and multicultural fluency is about respecting differences and working well with people from diverse backgrounds. I plan to apply this by keeping an open mind, listening more, and making sure I create an inclusive and respectful environment wherever I work.
students can reflect on their own culture to gain awareness and insight of others.
Global/multicultural fluency is about respecting and valuing diverse cultures, experiences, and perspectives. I’ve learned that helping students build cultural awareness improves collaboration and prepares them for diverse work environments.
I have learned that diversity may exceed what you teach or incorporate with ethnicity. One culture will be 100% different from the next no matter the professional circumstance
It is important to be aware of cultural differences from diverse student backgrounds.
It's important to provide student voice in the CTE classroom in regards to promoting global/multicultural fluency for both our students as well as to grow professionally ourselves. As, we learned, "show & tell" can be a great way to provide an outlet for our students to not just share their backgrounds and perspectives but for everyone to gain new outlooks based on what is shared with us. This can lead to valuable soft skills and students learn to "manage" their fellow co-workers, colleagues, employers and future employees regardless of which field they transition to post-high school.
Nowadays, we live in constant interaction with a multicultural world. As instructors, we can help prepare our students for productive and positive experiences that foster greater acceptance and respect for others.
Additionally, we can encourage students to share their own cultures, allowing them to express themselves and spark curiosity about other cultures. Although we may face various challenges, such as differing expectations, stigmas, language barriers, and physical obstacles, we can take the time to learn about other cultures. By doing so, we can create a welcoming environment where students feel comfortable discussing sensitive topics and considering the feelings and concerns of their peers.
Wide variety of students = wide variety of learning, experiences and differences.
Students need to acknowledge we do not live in a monocultural world and the job and employment landscape will reflect this.
