Synchronized technique

I find it very difficult to engage students to attend to live sessions be it with chats or video conference.  Any help?

We have used in the announcements a formal invitation to join the session.  It helps sometimes, depends on the class.

I think this would be a difficult task knowing that many of my students go on the computer when others are sleeping. They do not have schedules that line up.

I think a common issue with students who take courses online is the ability to manage their time.  They probably see the need to engage or meet with instructors, but don't plan time to meet.  If we could get them to committ to participate in chats and other synchronized activities they would see that a lot of their questions could be answered and that they could learn from the experiences of their classmates.
