Low enrollment

I am an advocate of online learning, but I must admit it is difficult in a course with low enrollment.  How do you keep students engaged and active if there are less than 5 in the course?

I find the most challenging element is getting students to the interactive portion of the class. Once a student attends a chat, or replies in the Forum, they tend to stay a part of the class.

There needs to be a sense of a risk-free environment, so students feel comfortable submitting thoughts and responses without judgment.  Starting with a poll so that students identities are anonymous is one way to set up that environment.  Posting questions with more than one right answer so students can express without penalty.  Setting up the course delivery so that continuous participation is needed is key. Students need to realize participation is necessary.

Hi Kim,

I experience that as well.  It is really hard, but I try to add follow up questions.. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
