Strict phone usage rules in the classroom are a mandatory so students can focus on respecting the instructors time and lesson. Yes, Gen Y and Z have the urge to be connected and check their phones, however, it is not a necessity. Sometimes technology becomes addicting for everyone. That is how most people know if they send a message or check a post there will be a quick response because the person on the other end also has anxieties about being connected. It benefits us to take time to disconnect from technology and have in person face time. In person face time can be especially beneficial in an educational setting, in study groups, during office hours.
I have learned that I need to set strict rules regarding cell phone use in the classroom. In addition to that I have learned that as a "Boomer", I should not pretend to know all of the new terminologies that go with the newer technologies, however, I should strive to learn about them in order to foster better student relationships. I am not a "Native" but an "Immigrant" when it comes to technology.
One of my biggest takeaways from this module is that technology shouldn't be a one-size-fits-all requirement, but rather a flexible tool
Instructors must be mindful of the different learning types that come with each generation.
Younger students have a different approach to learning due to the new age technology that generation x never had.
The world of technology is upon us as instructors. We have to embrace the pros and cons and encourage students to utilize other means of learning.
Technology needs to be balanced with human connection.
The human factor is very important when using technology in the classroom, especially for online learning.
Remember technology is not a must use but should be worked in to keep the students engaged and interested.
Technology is not a must to serve the Gen Y and Gen Z population. However, it helps them feel more connected and understanding of what content is being presented to them. It's good to be familiar with what these generations are comfortable with and what their expectations are.
It is good to integrate more technology into the classroom, but the most efficient way to tell a group the same information in a classroom setting is a dynamic and interesting lecture, followed by question prompts and discussion on the lecture (to see if they paid attention, and to learn the material in more depth).
I never thought about how Gen Y was afraid of being out of contact. Everyone has smart phones now. I do my best to make sure to limit their access to their phones and focus on what's going on in class. I know that life happens, and students need to respond to their phones. However, I have noticed some students use that as an excuse to just browse on their phones.
Technology can be a double-edged sword: noisy, distracting and possibly inaccurate yet puts the world at your fingertips. Often technology use can seem forced in the classroom "trying to include technology."
It is important for instructors to stay on top of new technology since this is what is out there in the world, it is important for students to gain knowledge in the new state of the art.
I think viewing technology as a tool rather than as the main source of instruction is important. I also like the thoughts on blurring of personal and work time and ow those boundaries need to be clear.
As a digital immigrant, it is important to understand the need for connectivity that the digital natives have. It is also important to regulate use of technology in the clinical site.
Technology is essential in today's generation, so it is necessary to stay up with the times.
Technology is the only way Gen Y and Z feel connected to society. These days, it's an essential tool to keep students engaged and interested in learning.
Technology is important in education and learning how to use it effectively in the classroom is very necessary.
