Educational Games-How do we find a happy medium?

I find that being competitive is a great way to build a students confidence on the information given on that particular day. I find that I seem to loose my students when I just have notes and I explain sometimes. Games and competitive strategies are a great way to help the moral and confidence in the student. However, what about the student who isn't sure about him/her and doesn't perform well in the class "game"? How should we find a happy medium?

I find Jeopardy as a great tool for learning. We create games related to our course and set up teams to not only work together for the game but also help create the questions in the game. By writing the answer then having to get the matching question, it gives the game a spin. It let's them feel more involved and powerful. No matter how they finish in the game, they all learned some valuable information that will apply in future quizzes and test.
