Rubrics/ Un-Grading

What are some methods you have utilized to assess a student's learning without actually giving a grade that measures it or requires a rubric to be utilized for grading?

Depends on what class you are teaching. If its a lab class I find that just working with my student one on  without a competency sheet can help. This allows the student to work at their own pace without just thinking about their being graded. Have a conversation with the student 1st to find out if they really understand the procedure and expectations. If they don't understand either, its ok to reiterate the information. Now you can begin the assessment, and more than likely encouraged the student.
