Foundation of Trust

Building trust among the veteran student population often requires a different approach than for the general student population; what challenges have you found to be the most difficult to overcome?

Media Cause and Effect

What are several ways the media has propagated veteran positive and/or negative social stereotypes?

Confidence and Culpability

As difficult as it may be to measure confidence, the majority of veterans do not feel confident in finding a job. Is it the academic institution’s role to develop veteran confidence levels and, if so, what methods do you suggest?

Third party employment verifiers

I have found out that now we will have to have a third party verify our work. Sometimes it's hard enough to get students to call you back and now we have to pay for someone else to come in and do the same thing we are already doing? One other barrier to employment that wasn't mentioned in this first topic is drugs. The government doesn't require a student to be drug free when they apply for FAFSA but we are required to assist them in finding work even when we know they aren't drug free. I don't think someone should be given a school loan through our tax dollars if they can't be drug free.

Alumni Fundraising

Dear Professor, While traditional colleges spend a lot of resources on focused alumni fund-raising, this course discourages it. I don't feel there was clear reasoning behind it. Can you please elaborate for me? Thanks. Laurie

Alumni Recruitment

How do you suggest recruiting alumni to join the new Alumni Association who have been out of school for several years?

jobs that require licensure

At my school, students must first graduate from our program -- and then sit for a state board examination before they are allowed to be placed in a job. So many of them procrastinate in taking the exam -- rendering the placement department ineffective. Any suggestions?

Building an Alumni Community

I have just taken over the student services position at my school (I had previously been in Financial Aid). One thing we have trouble with is staying in touch with grads. I would like to begin building an Alumni Community for our grads. We already have a facebook page, but it gets VERY LITTLE traffic. Any other suggestions to jumpstart a program for Alumni?

Advise on keeping in contact with students

I find it hard to stay in contact with our graduates. When do we know when its ENOUGH? I continously try and call, email, and send letter but no respond?

What are the best techniques to keep students motivated?

I think one of the biggest problems may be the fact that students are not thinking about a job in the initial part of the course. Students are not motivated to work with career services until after they graduate. What are the best techniques you experienced that motivated students greatly?

How to provide career services assistance without having workshops.

Hi there, We do not have the staff or the funds to hire more staff for our career services department. It's just me and I have very little experience. I am learning more information everyday. With the lack of personnel it is next to impossible to host a workshop. We started a Career Services part of our website that gives tutorials of what, when and how for the job searcher. What suggestions do you have to make the best of our situation.

Contacting the hiring managers at companies

I am beginning to grow our Career Services Department. I am trying to contact the hiring managers at local hospitals and clinics to build a relationship. Any suggestions on how to go about doing this?

One wo-man Placement/Career Service Department

I am the one wo-man show of the Placement Department. I work for a small medical training school. We are very short staffed and just finished a month of lay offs. So now, even more short staffed. I have a good amount of experience in Admissions, but not in Career Services. 2 months ago I was asked to take over the Career Services Department. I am learning day by day. We have about 350-400 students at any one time. Question-With it just being me with little experience, little time, and lots of students needing help, how can I effectively help students with their resumes and job searches? Basically, what should I concentrate my time on? Outreach to companies who may hire our students, helping students with their resumes, cover letters, job searches...? Thanks so much for your input. - Corey Allaway

How do you create a career CENTER with no space?

Myself and our career services coordinator have 2 separate offices. But, I want to have a resource area and a student computer for students to update resumes, write cover letters and perform a job search. Any suggestions on how to maximize space?

Need ideas for a one man show job placement department?

I work at a small post-secondary school, and I'm already on work overload. I now have to head up job placement as well. How much involvement could I expect from other staff memebers?

21st Century Marketing Collateral

As technology has enabled new ways for jobseekers to market themselves, will the resume be replaced?  Why or why not?  If so, by what?

Students with Gaps in work History

What do you do with students who have gaps in their work history, no work history, or they have a history of jumping jobs?

Graduate and employer surveys

We have changed our surveys numerous times throughout the years. It seems to me the longer the survey the less we get returned. Any feedback or comments?

Career services in classroom

I believe this is a great way to teach the students how to network. They need to be networking with other students and their instructors. What better way than to intorduce it in the classroom!!
