The Importances of Prep

I really appreciate the emphasis that this module places on preparation. To this day, I still take time to look over my notes before a class, just to stay on top of things.

For All Instructors Alike

From the first time teacher, to the seniored professor who's mastered their craft, I think this course gives everyone something to learn. It definitely helps you sit back and assess what you're doing, and how to do it better.

Learning Styles

Hello: As I enter the classroom. I try to put my self in the place of my students. In doing this I'm able to remember how I learned different sections of my material being covered. I have kept notes over the years and how I developed my learning process in school. I apply this to my classroom and students.

First Meeting

Hello: The first day of class sets the tone for the course as a whole. If you are not prepared to start the course you loose the confidence of the students.

Planning and Prep

Hello: I have found the more I put into my class prior to the class the better the class moves along. This preparation also allows the students to see my commitment to the material and their success in the classroom.

Finding My Style

Hello: I have only been teaching face to face for the last 6 months. As I move along I have been developing a style. This course has helped me to find clues as to how to further develop my style and approach to the classroom. I look forward to further course work here and the exchange of ideas with other teachers.

What to make a Great Teacher?

The difference between a good and great teacher is that good teachers helps students to learn things, while great teachers motivate and inspire students. I tend to teach students how to catch the fish than feed them with fish, and become a good self-learner. However, you need to be aware of what your students really want. One strength I had over other teachers is my industrial experiences. I found it very effective to link real-life case studies to what they learned from the textbook. If you could show students where to use what they learned and motivate them to learn more, than it becomes a life-time learning, and they will benefit from it for the rest of their lives.

Learning Styles

Hello Everyone, After reviewing the material I was able to further understand the importance of instructing students of various learning styles. A visual learner would rather read lessons, view pictures, graphs, or other visual props to support their learning. An auditory learner would rather listen to lessons or tape lessons to gather an understanding of what is being presented. A kinesthetic learner is a person that would rather have a hands-on approach to learning by actively taking notes, working on a project, or actively highlighting material to be active while reading the material as they are learning. Everyone has a specific learning style; understanding your learning style can help you be productive with in your online studies.

Course Development

Most universities/colleges have a course development team to ensure proper content and textbooks were included. A pool of test questions is prepared to ensure consistency across the courses. It is also important to give the instructors flexibility to customize the course materials to better achieve the course goals/objectives. This also relieved the instructor from the burden of preparing the course in a one-of-kind manner. Another key part is to provide feedback to continuous improvement. I found places without a on-line component make it very unproductive, and the instructor has to spend a lot of time to prepare than to deliver the course. I also found the quality among different courses were quite different. It is critical to have people who had the skills and potentially had taught those courses before to develop the course shell.

Professional Development

This course over emphasized that taking classes as the most important thing for Professional Development. I agreed that taking classes are critical to understand some theory behind to improve your Technical competency, and potentially your Professional and Personal competencies. However, I found real-life experiences and continuous improvements are more effective for me. I also found exchanging ideas with a peer are also very helpful to deal with specific situations.

Instructor Competencies

I really appreciate this opportunity of learning more about how to become a better instructor through this coursework and webinars provided by our college. I've had the privilege of teaching adults for several years now and enjoy it more than I did when I first began teaching. This coursework will help fill in the gap for me professionally as I have not had any formal instruction of classroom technique other than a few workshops here and there. I've chosen education as my second career choice and am loving every minute of it. Really appreciated the professional reference of www.acteonline.org - I plan to join soon.

Creative course content

I find it difficult to find create course content. What are some ideas to keep it fresh?

Can syllabus have too much information for the first day?

I find students have trouble processing the information on the first day.

Students who act inappropriately

What are some tools to deal with these types of students?

Students disabilities

It is very important the instructor know what kind of disability the student have so the instructor can support them in the class. Very good point!

Students learning a new language

The students learn a new language and a new carrier at the same time than some of them has more difficulty to understand the class. Very interesting this point!

Old School -vs- Modern

Although all of these suggestions with the use of color and music seem wonderful. My director is old school and relies heavily on the use of a chalk board. Although I would love to decorate the room with posters and charts, how do I get my director to agree to that? Next class, I am going to play some music for them and see how they react.

Questioning in class

Is the best way to interac with the students and be able to know the level of learning.

Learning Styles

Is The best way to learn how to deliver new information and know the diferet students in class.

The need for teacher's to continue learning

I particularly enjoyed this part of the module because I always challenge myself to keep learning. At the beginning of each course that I teach, I share the following quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Every man is my superior at something and in that, I learn of him." I explain to the class that we all come from diverse backgrounds and have different life experiences. I let them know that we all have something to offer and that I expect to learn from their thoughts and life experiences. I believe sharing this line of thought encourages students to speak up and also opens them to the idea of learning from one another. Jan
