Guest Speaker via Skype

I've invited a lot of guest speakers over the years, but I tried something different recently, inviting a guest speaker who was quite a long ways away to talk to my class via Skype. It worked out really well. I don't think it had as much impact as if he had actually been present, but the fact that the speaker was responsive to student questions and had an interesting presentation overcame that lack of physical presence. In the end the students gave it a big thumbs up. One suggestion I have for doing this (or any other guest speaker) is to have some follow-up on a subsequent week. You can be pretty sure that the speaker will still be thinking about the visit for some time after (in general they love talking to college students and get quite a buzz from the experience), so I have the students make up a series of questions and I email them to the speaker a few days after the event. If the speaker replies (they always do), read/email his responses to the class. They'll appreciate the additional effort.

Test Review

My policy is to review quizzes immediately after ir is taken. This allows my students to know immediately what they got wrong and have an opportunity to explain why they chose that option. It gives me an opportunity to teach them how to read and dissect nursing questions that require aqdvanced critical thinking skills. It also helps me to better understand why a question may be problematic and need to be revisedin the future and be dropped on this test.

Procedures

Early on in my teaching carrier, I had hard time to manage my time. Often I would be running out of time and hover into the break time. With experience and having back up plans, I do not spread myself thin. I dont start a topic which I know I can not finish intime. Leaving the the topics half way through has had dire consequences for me. The students may not recall where we left out and I may be redundant. Once again, time management has reduced these issues in my work.

Ice breaker

One of the strategies that I use to get to know my student is to have them do a life line with the most important events up to the present time that they have experienced. Or simply introduce themselves to the class, elaborate on reasons for taking my cource and their goals; and share one personal note if they wish. I start myself with a humorous introduction. This reduces the anxiety and makes me more personable to them. In this manner I gather loads of knowledge about my students, their potencies, and personalities. This also solidifies a bond between us which cohessively creates a rapport vital to my success.

extra credit

I found that students are excited about extra credit. I try to offer extra credit when ever avaiable to do so.

delivery of lesson

I agree with the course content being a factor as it relates to determining an instructors' delivery. Some content is better presented using alternate methods.

powerpoints

Powerpoints can be very effective in getting the information across that is needed. However, there is such a thing as over killed with sounds and effects, I believe.

understanding your personality

Understanding your personality is important. It is also important to be able to adjust in situations were personalities may clash.

How to keep students on task with their own laptops

How do you guys keep your students on task if you allow them to use their own laptops in class.

Incorporating Technology in the classroom

Ways to intigrate technology in the course could range from powerpoints, emailing students, haveing class material excessible on line or on the chool student portal to inviting students to text questions or comments to you. this could also include 'You Tubing' a demonstration.

Efficient

Ultimatley a well compiled lesson plan contributes to you becoming a more efficient instructor and creating a positive learning enviroment.

lesson planning

It is important to allow time at the beginning and at the end of the class to allow for questions at the beginning and a review at the end of class. because there might not be questions on a topic it is important ot be able to stimulate questions. The class will like it if the class finishes early but they still need to see the value of the time spent in class so finishing too early will always alienate some of the class as they will feel short changed.

re:make up practicals

what are the opinions and experiences with allowing students to do make up practicals

Test Review

Test anxiety runs high when a test is approaching. I like to give a test review the day before the test. Most of the time students are surprised at how much information they have actually retained. Following up with words of encouragement helps as well.

Different Learning Styles

It is important to remember students have different learning styles. By keeping this in mind you are able to get the focus and concentration needed from every student to help them be successful.

Field Trips

Field trips motivate and inspire students to pursue their goals. I take my students to Ross and have them put together an outfit they would wear to an interview. Most of them get excited about putting a professional outfit together because that is where they see themselves headed at the end of their training.
