Understanding Generations

After completing the modules, I have learned about the significance of understanding the variance of generations and the need to approach each person with care and respect to how they best function. For traditionalists, its good to be respectful and direct; for baby boomers, it's good to know that they are hard-working and competitive; for generation x-ers, it's good to keep in mind that they have an entrepeneurial spirit; and for millennials, it's good to express positive reinforcement and creating a fun atmosphere.

I listened to a comedian last week at one of my professional development seminars and he tore up these categories. He brought it all down to, “Change is good for old people”, that’s how he said it!

I truly believe in the learning styles of the different generations. Being a good listener is what attracts people to us.

I took this particular course to gain insight and understanding of the “whys” to certain age groups. In Corporate America today, we encounter multiple generations with different view and perspectives that do not necessarily agree our own. I’ve learned I am a Gen X’er that identifies with views of past generations and adapts to the technology of subsequent generations. As the years pass, I manage younger generations and knowing more about their general ideals, concepts, views etc. it will give me a better understanding on how to achieving a productive and healthier work environment.
