Action Plan: Reflective Listening

When a student asks a question, an instructor's automatic reflex is to provide a response. To be the most effective instrucor, one of the strategies I have learned from this course is to practice reflective listening. Reflective listening is a communication strategy that can enhance instructor's understanding of what the student is saying and reflecting it back. I remember "reflection" as one of the therapeutic communication techniques that we should employ with our patients. I have not considered it a technique to apply to my students. But it has to be a conscious effort to do so, because one has to actively listen - pause, listen - before responding.

I am going to try that more.

Years ago I remember having to go it alone and then would report back to my instructor/teacher with my own analysis of understanding and challange them with my view I would often find that the instructor really didn't understand what he/she were teaching. My take on it was unless you love to understand it and teach what you love about knowing what you understand then don't become a teacher or instructor. Just saying...........

I beleive a great teacher will lead, by example.
