Engaging online learners

I feel that the online learning environment is just as important as in class learning. I utilize a little bit of class time to cover the discussion threads just in case there are students that have questions. This can increase student engagement and we can brain storm answers as a class.

Hi Karine!

Great ideas in ways to engage students! I like to post a "QUESTIONS" in our first weekly discussion to ask if any of the students have any "real world" questions they would like to know about working the health care field or industry. This usually generates a great discussion because they begin asking questions that I can follow up with information regarding the health care industry, and their expectations as future employees. This builds their enthusiasm for the remaining weeks with me. :)

I found the course very informative. Although I do not teach online courses, I trained for online courses and this training session assisted me in development of the online course. Great training session.

I agree that engaging online learners is an important aspect of our job of teaching.  In the process of engaging we are also helping students to achieve their own “self-management”.  Too often students do not anticipate how to manage their time. Their studies often take the smallest portion of their day.   They justify why they do so and it is best to share with them how you manage your own day.  Too often they feel alone in their struggle to find the time.
