I’ve learned the importance of creating a positive and engaging environment for students to succeed, both in and out of the classroom. It’s not just about teaching content, but also about helping students develop EQ (Emotional Intelligence), which research shows can be even more important than IQ for long-term success.

By focusing on characteristics like dependability, honesty, self-efficacy, and teamwork, I can help students build the soft skills they need to overcome obstacles and thrive in their careers. I apply this by incorporating interactive and motivating techniques in my lessons, whether it’s using visualization exercises, telling stories, or creating a positive atmosphere where mistakes are seen as learning opportunities.

At the beginning of every term, I tell my students that this is the "touchy-feely mod" because I teach them personal life lessons that will help them succeed once they graduate (I teach the final term of our program). On day one, I emphasize that they must be “100% responsible for their life and everything that happens in it.” This means not blaming others for failures and not letting themselves off the hook for their mistakes, but instead taking full responsibility and learning what they can do differently next time.

Helping students understand their emotions, stay motivated, and set goals will not only boost their academic success but also prepare them for the challenges they’ll face beyond school.
