FERPA is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. It gives students certain rights, such as:

  • The right to access their education records – Students can review their grades, transcripts, and other official records.
  • The right to request corrections – Students can ask to amend records if they believe information is inaccurate or misleading.
  • Control over disclosure – Schools cannot share personally identifiable information from a student’s records without the student’s consent, except under specific exceptions (like health and safety emergencies or certain legal requirements).
I also learned that FERPA applies to all educational institutions that receive federal funding, and violations can have serious consequences for both the institution and staff.
