I learned that effective coaching is about helping employees grow, improve their skills, and take ownership of their development. A good coach does not simply point out problems; they provide specific feedback, ask thoughtful questions, listen, and help the employee identify solutions. I also learned the importance of observing behaviors, giving clear examples, and separating coaching conversations from performance evaluations.
I intend to apply these skills by being more intentional with my coaching conversations. I will focus on asking open-ended questions that encourage employees to think through challenges and develop their own solutions. I will also make sure my feedback is specific and focused on behaviors and outcomes rather than assumptions. By creating a supportive environment, I can help team members build confidence, improve performance, and continue developing their skills.
One area I would like to continue improving is recognizing coaching opportunities in the moment and finding ways to make coaching part of my regular interactions rather than only addressing issues when they arise.
