I learned that the motivation and encouragement I was used to giving in residential teaching, should still apply to online teaching. Sometimes I get so focused on simply having the course set up, and providing good course work, that I forget I am dealing with human beings that need that human touch. I plan to improve on being more encouraging in my feedback, and offering an opportunity for students simply to get together and chat.
