This module reinforced the importance of relational communication in supporting student success and retention. I learned that effective communication goes beyond providing information; it involves intentionally building rapport, validating emotions, and creating an environment where students feel heard, respected, and supported.
One concept that stood out to me was the use of tentative stems and check-out statements. These strategies help ensure that I accurately understand students' concerns while encouraging open dialogue and collaboration. I also found response sequence to be valuable, as it emphasizes first acknowledging a student's presence and emotions before addressing concerns or offering solutions. This approach can help students feel understood and reduce frustration or anxiety.
Moving forward, I intend to apply these techniques in my interactions with students by using more empathetic language, validating their feelings, and tailoring my responses to their individual needs. I also plan to incorporate elements of the ARCS model to increase student motivation by highlighting the relevance of course activities, building confidence, and recognizing achievements. By doing so, I hope to strengthen student engagement, foster stronger working relationships, and support student persistence and success throughout the program.
