So far in this course, I’ve been reminded just how important it is to help students manage their time well. It’s also been a good reminder for me, as the instructor, of how much time students really need to be putting into the course. Because of that, I try to regularly encourage them to set aside enough time each week if they want to be successful.
I also really like the focus on deadlines. In my courses, everything is due Sunday at midnight, but I constantly remind students not to wait until the last minute. It seems like something always comes up on Sundays, and they end up not getting as much done as they had planned. I’ve actually seen this play out many times—students will tell me they planned to spend Sunday finishing their work, but then family plans, work shifts, or unexpected issues come up, and they run out of time. Because of that, I try to gently push them to start earlier in the week so they’re not relying on just one day to get everything done.
