Student Learning Assessment
There are two types of assessments we need to familiarize ourselves with as instructors: formative and summative. Formative assessments are most popular and traditional. Students take a test, regurgitate answers and that tests their knowledge. These assessments can also include quizzes, labs, projects or special assignments. When trying to understand how much knowledge and application of knowledge (SKILL) the student has incorporated, a summative assessment is made. Summative assessments can include objective such as asking students to recall facts that are relevant to their field. A subjective summative assessment can involve problem solving, formula applications, studies found in their field and how they relate to their knowledge.
