retention

if given a good orientation and are given all of the expectation the retention should be high

James,

I have found that expectations need to repeated or reset at the beginning of every term. This provides for continuity and consistency throughout the student's course of study.

I agree if you go over with them in orientation and tell them what you expect of them the suscess is high

orientation is one part of the puzzle, the second part. if admissions is not covering what is needed and more concerned with "selling the dream" then orientation can be a disaster. being told one thing in admissions and shown ponies and rainbows and then getting the reality check at orientation can scare students away. admissions has to be more knowledgeable about the programs offered and not just sitting people in the easiest program to sell. If they would spend more time trying to find out what interests the student and not just filling the easy sell program, retention would improve greatly. it also would save the student from switching to the right program for them later.

Deborah,

Education needs to establish and maintain a relationship with Admissions and provide Product Development. This will prevent the easy sell, help improve retention, and reduce switching programs.
