You can't manage what you can't measure

Retention metrics are useful & helpful only if they can actually have an impact on retention initiatives. With that in mind, essential retention stats might include data from checklists used by both the student and admissions personnel.
In addition, how effective would admission and retention benchmarking interviews be?
For example interviews such as offer rejected/accepted, post acceptance interviews, drop out interviews etc. may also hold valuable data that can be measured and used to improve retention statistics.

Remember, retention is an effect, not a cause. Your actions equal results. So, measure the impact of your interventions to improve retention. If your strategy is not working, change and try another strategy. Attention to retention will result in retention. It is that simple.

School standards and requirements are great measure that automatically determine if students are a good for the school as well as capable of performing. Student should always receive as much information about the program and the field, along with all resources offered by the school that assist in student success..

I would add that certain individuals be given the task of performing the interviews. Point being that a qualified, experienced person my be able to offer alternatives to students that see no other way to complete their education. Issues such as personal reasons or financial hardships can greatly affect the success of the student.

You have that right. Options are keys to improving student success and retention.

Totally agree. The key is to give them information that is consistent. Link academics with admissions earyl on to ensure that the same story is being told.

One way to help students realize what info they may get while in school is to offer a free day of learning prior to them starting school. Make it something fun and something they can use.

Mark,

This is a great idea. This way students are exposed to the educational model.
