We contact our students when they are absent from class on a daily basis to express our concern about their absence.

If our students are out three days we call or write them a letter showing we care about them

Michele,

Many schools make the call on every absence. What makes "three days" the trigger point in your school?

We contact our students daily when absent but the different departments take turns in making the calls. I once had a student call upset because she was absent one day and we called as we usually do. I told the student that at orientation we told all students that we would call if they were absent and the call was not to scold her treat her as a kid but it was out of genuine concern and her pressence was missed. The student calmed down and came in the next evening to meet "the voice on the other end". Just a note she visits every week to check in:-)

Helen,

The key is the tone of the call. If students perceive it as a genuine attempt to help, they will usually react well.
