Helping students remain positive and also really showing the importance of connections. I like the idea of having HR come in and speak with students about what they are looking for is helpful.
In career development, all of the stages are important in their respective significance. However, the preparation and commitment stages are the most crucial of them. These stages are like the final leg of a race. The whole purpose is to get to the finish line, and one cannot finish the race without making it through that final stretch, let alone running the entire distance and seeing that through.
Preparing for interviews, writing resumés, building networks and following up after the interview are all the steps for building interpersonal communication and relationships in the working world. Whether a student is pursuing a job, or attempting to land a contract as an entrepreneur, the process is the same for networking and building bridges, even if the resumés look different, or if the process of applying for a role is not the same. This process also helps build confidence in the students, so over time with practice, they will be able to master the art of interviewing, thus increasing their chances of landing roles and opportunities that help them build great careers.
Stay focused and determined.
There are so very many steps in actually securing employment, from researching available job opportunities, to resume development, the application process, interviewing and then follow up. Ongoing support for students that we can provide on this journey can be life changing for them, and we just might be that one and only person who was there to help them.
I do like the idea or having HR come to class to speak to students about things to expect on a resume.
This is one of the most time consuming steps as you want a professional resume and some students have little experience.
I appreciate learning the steps I will take to now narrow down my career choice and how important networking, job hunting and cleaning up the social media posts.
I learned that the Preparation stage is about gaining skills and experience for a career, while the Commitment stage means deciding to follow that path and staying focused. I plan to help students set goals and find real-world learning opportunities to support their commitment.
Teaching kids interview and resume skills are important when they are applying for college and future jobs to see what to look out for, be prepared, and also how to be professional as well
I hope that I can teach my students to present themselves in a positive light, highlighting their strengths with integrity.
I hope that every student will have done research on the employer's business and have prepared two to three questions during the interview.
Help students stay positive. Help them network in the field they are interested in.
Something I have done and will continue to do regarding the preparation and commitment stages are to have my students develop an E-Portfolio, which contains their personal and professional missions statements, and "About Me" section which includes a Resume and an Accomplishment/Achievements section and to include a profile for contact information as well. This way the can, on the fly, provide a prospective employer with a link to their Resume but also everything else that might not fit so snuggly into a crisp 1 page resume. This gives the impression to the employer that the prospective higher is more than just a piece of paper. My students are people that employers want to meet.
I need more help with finding and supporting certifications for my kids.
Modifying goals happens in the preparation stage. Help keep students on track. Educate them on the commitment stage that involves choosing a career and what all the things are that come with it. This would include networking with others in that job field and all the required items that go along with job hunting.
To remain positive for the students.
