Staying Current

Admissions agents take on the responsibilty of communicating to the prospective student what their institution is about and gaining the trust of that student. This is why it is extremely important that all agents are trained, know the compliance regulations, and stay current with everything that is going on within their institution and their industry as a whole. Staying in the know on these topics is easily done through your supervisor, the internet and periodicals within the field and the job market as well.

Patti

Patti,
Great words of wisdom! We need to continually refresh our knowledge as our sector is very dynamic. Information changes daily.

The knowledge of the admission staff can either be an advantage or disadvantage. If they are not knowledgeable with programs and employment opportunities, the liklihood the student will go elsewhere. Therefore, monthly or quarterly meetings with academics and graduate placement personnel can benefit the admission staff. The linkage between program managers and admissions staff is vital. The training talked about representatives sitting in classes. Taking that one step further, academics should go through an admission interview to get a clear understanding of the process. Only then, can the linkage begin.

Shannon,
The only way we can understand the entire process is to become involved in the school from beginning to end. Sitting in on classes and speaking with faculty will give you a whole new perspective.

Hi Patty,

Do you feel that peer training is also important? If members of a staff have several years of experience, should peer training be utilized in preparation for formal training or could peer mentoring result in misinformation being spread?

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,
I have found that a mix is best. Even some of the most seasoned professionals don't have all the answers. A new person can see things in a different light and ask questions that the pro doesn't have an answer for.

Knowing all parties of the institution, education, financial aid, career services, student services, instuctors, directors, and admissions is a great practice to keep up to date with all new information that they may know and have discussions on. Staying on top of your game is the key.

Rita,
Good communication is key and it is very important to involve everyone in the process.

I'm agree with you Patti. Everybody in the department should be well informed about any changes. It's the best way to provide the most current and correct info to our prospects.

I agree. Anyone who meets with prospects or current students should always be informed of any new updates.

Judith,
Being current is very important. Trust comes with each step.

yes best way is to stay in touch when school start and end.

Dale,
