Tweets

Twitter has grown from a fad to a mainstream social media tool. It’s used by people and by brands. The opportunities for an educator to communicate, build community, build awareness, and sales potential through Twitter are plentiful. But, many educators don’t understand Twitter and how it can contribute measurable results. Integrating Twitter into a class plan requires an understanding of the Twitter etiquette and best practices to engage people in meaningful ways.

Sabrina,

You are right. A great example is the situation with the Microsoft leader and his comments about women asking for raises. People were tweeting before he was through with the comments. What powerful tools. . .

How would an educator stop certain behaviors on Twitter feeds though?

Milka,

I would have a rubric that measured certain qualities of a tweet. If there were issues with a tweet you would have the students bring it down. That doesn't fix what has happened. I would also have them sign an acceptable use agreement regarding the conduct expected in tweeting.

Sabrina,
I am interested in your post here as I have always thought of the use of Twitter in such a personal way. I never thought of using it as a way to educate, communicate and build awareness, but I can see how this could be a benefit. You mention how integrating this requires an understanding of Twitter etiquette and best practices. Have you used it and what are some "lessons learned"?
Stephanie

Stephanie,

I actually have a colleague that uses twitter to delivery professional development content to her students in the field. It works beautifully.
