What are some take aways from reviewing active learning

Some key take aways I have with the concept of active learning are remembering that depending on the content some students may retain more information in groups with their peers. While I believe the instructor/facilitator review has a place, students being able to work in groups does in my opinion help with retaining the overall concepts. With technology advances and more classes being available online there is a place for interactive competitive games. Students seem to really enjoy them. My question is with classes that require in person attendance how can we bring back students engagement in the classroom when they may prefer an online option?
