ATTENTION DEFICT DISORDER
the question is: how do you motivate an ADD student without threatening his autonomy and false sense of security....
LAURENT, what discussions have you had with the student to better understand their perceptions of motivation? Getting their direct feedback and including them in the techniques could provide some great insight.

on my part it required a constant non agressive monitoring and nurturing to establish a direct line of communication that the student would understand in order to become more self confidant and self reliant, i guess its all about trust, or giving him that assumption, however it is important to set limits and to give him a choice as to crossing those lines or not in order for him to interprate and understand the concept of being responsible
LAURENT, what an awesome revelation. What you are describing is an actual method of communication for many students within our sector of higher education. Students will come to use from very different walks of life and different methods of communication. For some, until a level of trust is established, the student is simply not interested in anything you have to say. The fact you are the instructor is not enough for them to trust you. Many instructors today feel their title gives them a level of credibility or entitlement from their students and this just is no longer the case. As assumed level of trust and respect based on the title of instructor was the case 10 years ago but is not the case today or the days to come. Congratulations to you for realizing that trust must be earned and no one is entitled to anything regardless of title.

I have experienced giving the student constant feed back as well as nuturing the student into the guided direction and keeping them focused on the tasks at hand help to keep the student constistently progressing.
Kimberly, great example of being student focused. Different students will need different approaches to directing them to success. Some times just a little individual attention make make a huge difference. Thanks for sharing.

I have found that using physical activities which describe the concept are great ways to get ADHD students to become motivated. I might be lucky as I teach Anatomy where the human body is the subject but it might work in other areas
rafael, active learning is a proven method of transferring knowledge and the more students can perform various tasks the better they will acquire the skills you as the instructor desire to transfer. The trick is to be innovative and resourceful and do not view the glass as half empty versus always viewing the glass and half full where you have the room you need to add your own water.

There is a definite advantage to instruction when the details to subject are involving the learners own ability to comprehend how their anatomy is functioning.
It is defiantly a challenge to continuously motivate a students with ADD. However, the individual attention can really pay off and assist the student to feel secure and motivated.
