Setting the stage for learning

Could someone please share there experiences

Establishing a relationship with the students early on helps. I also make it clear from the beginning that I'm not there to talk the whole time and that I expect classroom participation.

When introductions are made I try to comment on each students goals and expecctations. This begins the dialogue with the individual student as well as introducing topics to be discussed. Students like to share their knowledge and experience, so even shy students have an opportunity to hear possitive feedback and reinforcement.

I agree that establishing a positive relationship with the students early will help. Also you should make it clear to every student in your class what you expect from them and also be honest and fair to each student.

Donta,
Two components, respect and rapport help students to become engaged in the learning process. We need to work on both of them with students each time we are in class.
