I really never new about open or closed questions and how it does make a student think this will really help me in my classroom of Adults.Has any one tried more complex questions. My favorite sentence was best way to discover how well you understand something is to try to teach it to somone else.I have used translation questions in my class it helped me as a instructor to see if they understand what I was teaching them.
Kathleen,
I use questioning in my classes all the time, mostly open-ended question. They encourage critical thinking and allows me to get feedback on material taught. I tell students all teh time that teh best way to lear anything is to teach it to someone else. Even seasoned teachers need reminders.

I also use open-ended question or I will also challenge them and have them answer there own questions. Or if a classmate can respond then at least i know that im getting through to them.
Kathy,
Questioning is an excellent way to check students' understanding. I use it all the time.

I Just fully learned the concept of open end questions and closed end questions. I can truly say that it make a difference to the students. As a leader in the classroom setting you can get alot of ideas out of them.
Tameka,
This is so true. We can learn a lot from our students. I find that questioning opens the class to more critical thinking.

I tend to use opened questions quite frequently. I constantly seek to have students who can think critically. Additionally, if a concept is coming across a little confusing, I will determine who might be understanding concept well to do give the ex[lamination to the peers. It has worked well with each of my classes. It helps me to do a better job of instructing
Clifton,
You are so right. Questioning on the whole allows us to check for understanding.

Related to this, sometimes I ask "in your own words, explain what this means". Or "if you had to explain this concept to a friend who never took a biology class, what would you say?"
Michael,
This is a great question to get feedback on how students have absorbed the material taught in class.
