Working with students who have learning disabilities

I initiate a discussion on learning disabilities when reviewing the syllabus in the first class. I think its important to approach this topic early as a way to help students with learning disabilities feel accepted, increase awareness about instructional supports, and to motivate self- advocacy.

we are limited by law what we can say about disabilities or do besides giving them more time.

Paul,
this is true, unless the student discloses to you. At that point you can take more steps to help them.

That is a great idea and I am gla you brought that up when you review your syllabus. I will incorporate this in the future.

If you find out early what the disiblity is and what kind of help they received in the past. You could incorporate those skills. It might help other students who are struggling to learn as well.

Mary,
yes, this is a good strategy for helping students who are struggling & can be that preventative attention needed.
